About this listen
From CWA Gold Dagger winner Mick Herron comes a shocking, twisted novel of psychological suspense about one woman's attempt to be better than ordinary
Twenty-six-year-old Maggie Barnes is someone you would never look at twice. Living alone in a month-to-month sublet in the huge city of London, with no family but an estranged sister, no boyfriend or partner, and not much in the way of friends, Maggie is just the kind of person who could vanish from the face of the earth without anyone taking notice.
Or just the kind of person MI5 needs to infiltrate the establishment and thwart an international plot that puts all of Britain at risk.
Now one young woman has the chance to be a hero - if she can think quickly enough to stay alive.

Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

You won't remember Mr. Heming. He was the estate agent who showed you around your comfortable home, suggested a financial package, negotiated a price with the owner, and called you with the good news. The less good news is that, all these years later, he still has the key. That's absurd, you laugh. Of all the many hundreds of houses he has sold, why would he still have the key to mine? The answer is; he has the keys to them all. William Heming's most at home in a stranger's private things.

Soon “Rippermania” takes hold of modern-day London, and the police are left with few leads and no witnesses. Except one. Rory spotted the man police believe to be the prime suspect.

The forest is my happy place. A chance to get away from my stifling apartment, the sweat of the city, a job I hate. A Sunday morning spent hiking in the woods with my dog is a dream come true...until it becomes a waking nightmare. I don't see the hole until it's too late. Then I'm at the bottom of it, staring up at the ground 12 feet above me. A stupid accident. Or was it? Because soon, someone's bringing me food and water. Someone who doesn't want me to see his face. Someone who knows what I did.

I enjoyed this book
It was different from the slough horse series, and yet entertaining. Not all of his books have to be the same. it’s nice to have his mind write some thing that is different and yet intriguing. I found the narrator superb.

Not his best work… not even close.
The story is a twisted variant of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Wakefield, featuring a gullible woman, a megalomaniacal english as a second language instructor pretending to work for the security service (MI-5) and a long lost sister.
The only truly interesting part of the story happens at the very beginning, and the rest is of little consequence or interest.

Different, but enjoyable.
"This is What Happened" is a slight departure for Herron, who typically writes slightly off-beat MI5 and Police/Detective Procedurals. It was appropriately darker in tone, without being gratuitous. I typically prefer a linear storyline, but Herron does an excellent job of using the Flashback Story to create interest, without becoming confusing. I found I correctly predicted the ending about half way through, but that did not bother me much.
Mick Herron is the first author that I have begun to read everything he has written; I find that I consistently enjoy most of his work. The calibre of writing is a notch above pulp writers. I think it is the "voice" with which his books are written that is the main reason I enjoy his writing so much. The language is casual, yet spirited and effortless. The stories are interesting, yet he manages to avoid (for the most part) the formulaic "feeling" that so many successful authors seem obliged to include in every successive novel.

The story was quite different than the audible description!
This just goes to show that the people at Audible, who write the title details, should actually at least skim the book! The story actually had almost nothing to do with MI5, Other than one character using it, fraudulently as their fake backstory. Other than that, I found the story quite compelling, though creepy.
