About this listen

The seventh and final volume in Jeffrey Archer’s New York Times bestselling Clifton Chronicles series, This Was a Man, brings the epic saga of the Clifton family’s love, loss, and ambition to a dazzling conclusion.

Harry Clifton’s story began in 1920, as a dock worker in England, and now he is set to write his magnum opus. As he reflects on his days, the lives of his family continue to unfold, unravel, and intertwine in ways no one could have imagined . . .

Harry’s wife Emma, who just completed her time at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, receives a surprise call from Margaret Thatcher. Meanwhile, Giles Barrington discovers a shocking truth about his wife, Karin. Sebastian Clifton becomes chairman of Farthings Kaufman bank, but only after Hakim Bishara’s abrupt resignation. Sebastian’s daughter Jessica is expelled from school, but her aunt Grace comes to the rescue. And Lady Virginia, who is set to flee the country to avoid her creditors, finds an opportunity to clear her debts after the Duchess of Hertford dies—and a way to finally trump the Cliftons and Barringtons.

Would you listen to This Was a Man again? Why?

I have listened to this whole series at least twice because I listen by myself, then I listen with my husband, and then we listen with our friends on long road trips. I don't like to have my friends listen to novels that I have not already listened to and know that they would love as much as I do.

What was one of the most memorable moments of This Was a Man?

I absolutely loved the Lady Virginia character and when she dropped the vases, I laughed out loud. Such fun and typically Lady Virginia vindictive!

What does Alex Jennings bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Alex Jennings' perfect inflection for each of the characters made the entire series delightful.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved the heart-felt eulogy that Harry gave for Anatoly Babakov and, of course, the tear-jerking eulogy given by Giles for Harry at the end.

Any additional comments?

I have suggested this series to several of my friends and family and they all feel as I do. This was a gripping series that we couldn't wait until each new book was released.

Addictive Series!!

I have spent the last few years waiting for the next installment and can track passages of my life based on which book I was reading. I will always associate this final book with the Christmas season that our 7 year house remodeling was finally completed.I loved Harry, Emma, Giles and family.
I know that things had to wrap up, however, I wished there had been more time spent developing Samantha and Set's next chapter.

So sorry it had to finally end

I liked the way the author was able to make an understandably sad ending, seem not so sad after all.

wanted the story to keep going.

My wife and I have listened to the entire Clifton Chronicles. Jeffrey Archer is an outstanding and compelling storyteller whose books are difficult to put down. We are truly sorry to come to the end of this amazing series. I have downloaded his other books and look forward to enjoying more of his work. Over the years, I have listened to literally hundreds of authors, but Jeffrey Archer is in a class by himself.

Outstanding storyteller

I thought this series was excellent - as a fellow writer I especially admired the scope of detailing, which I think is difficult to write and to keep going. I would have preferred that each book was more of a stand alone volume. Nevertheless, the storyline was engrossing throughout and the ending was very moving. I enjoyed the series immensely. I also loved hearing Alex Jennings rendition. Okay

A fabulous ending to the series
