About this listen

Should a woman give the man that once loved her - then killed her - a second chance at either? Not many people get a do-over, and mountain guide Vicky Golden isn't about to waste hers. With a new name, a new look, and a new attitude, she has the life she always wanted. But when a geothermal project threatens her precious Mt. Shasta, she risks exposing her secret to the world and to the man who wanted her dead.

Since his wife Brianna's accidental death, Dutch aristocrat Christiaan van Laere has punished himself for being an awful husband with long hours, long runs, and celibacy. He needs the Mineral Springs project to save his company's future and his family's fortune. He'll do anything to ensure success, including butting heads with a radical environmental group and the leader who bears a strange resemblance to his late wife. As Vicky and Christiaan up the ante to achieve their goals, they're forced to deal with dark secrets, painful emotions, and an undeniable attraction. But what happens when the world learns Brianna isn't dead?

Things are not as they seem!

Annie Oortman is a new author to me, while I have several books performed by Roberto Scarlato in my library. I was hooked on this book from the very beginning. I loved all of the twists and turns, suspense and imagery this book had. The narrator did an awesome performance and added so much emotion to the story. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. I was voluntarily provided with this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher, and/or narrator. I do not like to give away spoilers in a review, but this book has an awesome ending that I didn't see coming.

Nine lives has Bri

I enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. I had baz figured out from the beginning he was just everywhere and in everyone's business. I love that someone was willing to put their life on the line to save the mountains and springs within. And the hawk really made my day saving their homes.
Wish I could remember what ah fa doma (spelling) meant in English. It was expressed a lot.
I received this free for an honest review from the author or narrator.

excellent performance

I chose this story because of Roberto Scarlato. I've heard his voice before but with a different name. As always, he did an excellent job on reading this story. However, I usually skip when a story is told from a third person, but this one is pretty good, thanks to the narrator. He made it better and kept me listening. This author is new to me. I will look for her book in the future, unless it's told in a third person, then maybe not.

Do I Know You?

Vicky Golden has buried her past life, literally. Vicky is convinced her husband was behind the accident, that supposedly took her life. Vickie may have buried her old persona, Brianna, who was the insecure wife of an aristocrat and an alcoholic to boot. But she has reinvented herself, cleaned up her act, changed her face and started a new life far away in Shasta, California.

It’s been years since his wife died and Christiaan van Laere still hasn’t moved on. When he lands in Shasta to protect a project he’s been working on, he meets Vicky and feels that pull of attraction that he only felt with Brianna and while they look nothing alike something seems familiar…

Yes! This audiobook definitely ticks off all the boxes of what I like in a mystery. Adventure in the wilderness, intrigue, and romance. Both Vicky and Christiaan are likeable, each carries around a fair amount of baggage and deception runs deep on both ends.

This audiobook is narrated by Roberto Scarlato, who fully voices all the characters in this book. He does an amazing job voicing both genders and does a fantastic turn at voicing the bad guys. He knows just the right tone for each scene and he’s always entertaining. Roberto makes any story he narrates better and helps elevate this book to a 5-star rating.

Romantic suspense at it's best!

My favorite sub genre of suspense, Annie Oortman has written a second chance romance story that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. This story of Vicki/Brianna environmentalist and guide for rock climbers has more twists and turns in it that it continually kept me guessing. She rescues her husband, Christian and the story begins. The chemistry between the two is evident from the start and hearing their miscommunications and misunderstandings is heart wrenching. But the big question through this entire book, is why was their relationship the way it was? With old friends, social climbers, overbearing parents, murder plots and insecurities, this couple has had to deal with it all. The environmental aspect of the book is woven into the plot and it gives an interesting look at nature and how difficult it can be to keep development from happening. The views of scenery in the mountains is enough to make your mind picture the serene landscapes.

With narration by Roberto Scarlato, you can only want to leave our earbuds on. He has a way of performing so that you are tuned in with the characters and feel like they are your friends. Love his Dutch accent too, you will be glad to have spent your credit.
