Publisher's summary

From the Sunday Times Number One bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches, now a major Sky TV series, a novel about what it takes to become a vampire.

From human to vampire ...

Marcus Whitmore was made a vampire in the eighteenth century. Over two hundred years later, he finds himself in love with Phoebe Taylor, a human who decides to become a vampire herself.

But her transformation will prove as challenging now as it was for Marcus when he first encountered Matthew de Clermont, his sire.

While Phoebe is secreted away, Marcus relives his own journey from the battlefields of the American Revolutionary War, through the treachery of the French Revolution to a bloody finale in New Orleans. His belief in liberty, equality and brotherhood challenged at every stage by the patriarchy of the de Clermonts.

What will he and Phoebe discover in one another when they are finally reunited at Les Revenants, beneath the watchful gaze of Matthew and his wife, Diana Bishop?

Sunday Times Number One bestselling author Deborah Harkness returns to the spellbinding world she created in A Discovery of Witches and, through the prism of an unconventional love story, explores the power of tradition and the endless possibilities for change.

Critic reviews

What a rich, thrilling and educational tale it is... A captivating and romantic ripping yarn (E L James)
This is a glorious, finely-wrought gem of a book: intelligent, thoughtful, intricate... I could lose myself in here and never want to come out: what better accolade can there be? ...Utterly enchanting on every level (Manda Scott)

I expected a bit more

While I absolutely love the characters in the all souls trilogy, the storyline in this book seemed a bit haphazard and without any real directions. It felt a bit like a few sub-plots from the previous books were being explained but without any real plot of its own.

I wish there more books

Loved the stories, just wish there were books telling the tales of other characters.
I will miss Matthew & Diana the children, Marcus & Phoebe, Chris & Miriam , Isabo & Phillip and all the others.

Disappointing

I really love the Discovery of witches Trilogy and so looked forward to this but can't believe how disappointing it is. I did not like the narration at all, why was there a different narrator. The names were pronounce differently and the style of narration just didn't suit at all, so much so that I am not sure if it was the narrator or the story that was just plain boring. It's almost like a different author produced this book. So disappointing.

Bring back original narrator.. lackluster story

Bring back the original narrator from the All Souls books.

Lackluster and no plot, basic love story with no soul. This book didn't even seem to be written by the same author as the others.

Disappointing storyline

Love this addition to the All Souls Trilogy

Loved the story. Great addition to the All Souls Series. Not really sure why Matthew had an Australian accent though - found that quite irritating.

Amazing

Well, I'm suspected to speak because I love this author, so listening another book that offers a continuity for the series All Souls is an early Christmas gift.
The book is really very good, It's very well written, the narrative is excellent. The author brought back Mathew and Diana, but places Marcus and Phoebe in the center. . Without losing focus, we know Marcus's past in a subtle way while we are introduced to Mathew and Diana's dilemmas in raising children.
It's a great book that ends very quickly.

not what I expected

it was hard to listen to
missed the previous reader
after 3 books read by jenifer ikeda, and getting used to the voice changes for each character in a certain way,it was hard to listen to the book and getting used to the voices of the whole de clairmont 's and all their servants
the fans deserved better

I just culdb’t.

Story rating is irrelevant, but had to be included ti be able to post.
I’m sure I could have liked the story, but the narration was downright horrible. The way she exceedingly “hoarsed” her throat was too uncomfortable to listen to. If it’s ever made with another narrator, I’ll give it a second chance, or maybe eventually get the physical book..
