About this listen
Symphony Nelson has weathered more than her share of hardships - in part thanks to the faithfulness and affection of her adopted puppy, Toby. Her formerly chaotic life seems to be settling down, until a peaceful walk in the woods leads Symphony and Toby to the reclusive cabin of Caleb Showalter, who knows more about her past than he's telling.
When an old friend resurfaces and expresses his affection, Symphony warily longs for love, and it is Toby that nudges her toward pursuing a reconnection. But when violence strikes at the hands of her possessive boyfriend, Symphony's trust is shattered once again.
Just when Symphony's faith in humanity seems lost, Toby is injured in the woods, and she has no choice but to reach out to Caleb for help. Together, they face their fears and loss trust head-on. If they can save Toby, they might be able to let go of the past and to believe in the goodness of others - and themselves - once again.

At the hour when most prairie schools were letting out for the day, a terrifying, fast-moving blizzard blew in without warning. Schoolteachers as young as 16 were suddenly faced with life-and-death decisions.

Thoroughly enjoyable!
This book has all the elements that I enjoy in a story: romance, moral dilemma, happiness, intrigue, mystery and dogs! The story moved at a good pace; I never got bored, and always looked forward to the next chapter. I will definitely want to read other books from David Johnson!

For The Love Of Toby
What did you love best about Toby?
Just the dog!! Toby's point of view is the best! This is a well written hard luck story so if those are your fave and you love dogs, then this is for you.Note: I do use the new 1.25x speed to match the author's intent.
What could David Johnson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Author is a good writer, and develops this story very well, but this type of story has never appealed to me. I purchased as I love this reader + dogs, so I bought it.
Have you listened to any of Angela Dawe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Excellent story teller. See her Tiffany Snow series and any book e.g. Nora Robert's MacGregor series, Scotts brogue voice, none better.
If you could rename Toby, what would you call it?
Name just fine as this is a good book, just not my style.
Any additional comments?
If you love K-9, see James Rollins, Kill Switch, as it is a 4 star listen

David Johnson's novels elicit all emotions!
David Johnson's Tucker series is one of my all-time favorites although it is contemporary fiction which is far from my favorite genre. Toby is a standalone, but it has all of the factors that make the Tucker series great. The listener is guaranteed to laugh and to weep as this wonderful novel unfolds. Angela Dawe's narration is pitch perfect.
