About this listen

Return to Tokyo for a royal wedding in Emiko Jean's Tokyo Dreaming, the sequel to the Reese Witherspoon YA Book Club Pick and New York Times best seller Tokyo Ever After.

When Japanese-American Izumi Tanaka learned her father was the Crown Prince of Japan, she became a princess overnight. Now, she’s overcome conniving cousins, salacious press, and an imperial scandal to finally find a place she belongs. She has a perfect bodyguard turned boyfriend. Her stinky dog, Tamagotchi, is living with her in Tokyo. Her parents have even rekindled their college romance and are engaged. A royal wedding is on the horizon! Izumi’s life is a Tokyo dream come true.

Only....

Her parent’s engagement hits a brick wall. The Imperial Household Council refuses to approve the marriage citing concerns about Izumi and her mother’s lack of pedigree. And on top of it all, her bodyguard turned boyfriend makes a shocking decision about their relationship. At the threat of everything falling apart, Izumi vows to do whatever it takes to help win over the council. Which means upping her newly acquired princess game.

But at what cost? Izumi will do anything to help her parents achieve their happily ever after, but what if playing the perfect princess means sacrificing her own? Will she find a way to forge her own path and follow her heart?

How disappointing

Unfortunately, I had a hard time with this one. It isn’t half as charming nor funny as the first one. And it is even boring. Seriously, there is no plot whatsoever the first half of the book. And even though I loved Eriku, he felt flat. He deserved so much more than being a love interest just for the trope of a love triangle. It was obvious from the beginning his ending, and I did not enjoy it. The twins comeback was something I had anticipated and was most excited for, but how disappointing. The whole thing is disappointing because this doesn’t read like Izumi’s story. More like her mother’s story.

Different than the fist, but good!

Things were definitely wrapped up in a neat little bow with this one, but I really missed having her friends as major side characters. They were so flushed out and lovely, but this books characters didn’t feel as flushed out and maybe a little rushed? But I LOVED how we got more of her mom and more of her inner thoughts. Overall, I think it was a solid second book!

Just okay.

I really wanted to love this book like I did the first one, but it’s just okay. It didn’t capture my attention, and I found myself wanting to just “get through it”. The first book was fabulous and had so much…heart! This one kind of came off as “we had something really good with the first one, so let’s capitalize on that”. I think there is room for Izumi to grow in a third book, but only if she actually gets time to herself. I hope the 3rd book (if there is one) is about her coming into her own so we can actually see her personality (since she doesn’t have much of one right now), hobbies and interests.

Very relatable… even if I’m not a princess!

Any women can relate to a story of trying to conform to other’s expectation. This book 2 in the series was even better than the first.

Great sequel -!!!!

I really enjoyed this story and the last book. If you like princess Diaries you will love this. I really hope they make this into a movie series and include Japanese language just like the book or maybe even more! The Narrator is top notch and the author is a wonderful writer.

Meh

Asian story lines are usually more creative in their storytelling and romance. This just felt like a western story with Asian characters where the climax of the story includes a night in a hotel rather than actual depth of relationship.
