Publisher's summary

Trail of Echoes is the third Elouise Norton mystery audiobook from critically acclaimed writer Rachel Howzell Hall.

On a rainy spring day in Los Angeles, Homicide Detective Elouise "Lou" Norton is called away from a rare lunch date to Bonner Park, where the body of 13-year-old Chanita Lords has been discovered. When Lou and her partner, Colin Taggert, take on the sad task of informing Chanita's mother, Lou is surprised to find herself in the apartment building in which she grew up.

Chanita was interested in photography and, much like Lou, a black girl destined to leave the housing projects behind. Her death fits a chilling pattern of exceptional African American girls - dancers, artists, honors scholars - gone recently missing in the same school district, the one Lou attended not so long ago.

Lou is valiantly trying to make a go of life after her divorce and doing everything she can to avoid her long-estranged father. She races to catch a serial killer, but he remains frustratingly out of her reach, sending cryptic cyphers and taunting clues that arrive too late to prevent the next death. This one is personal, and it's only a matter of time before he comes after Lou herself.

Remarkable how the author is able to...

WOW!!! Truly remarkable how the author is able to voice the anger, hurt, frustration, & pain of a many black women who were deserted by their fathers. Detective Elouise Norton is the bomb.com for real. I listen and feel as if a good friend is catching me up on her life. Getting all the references from back in the day is so dope!! I was feeling wonky about my upcoming bday & had to stop & say a big Lou “Oh hell naw!” b/c if I wasn’t turning another year fabulous I couldn’t laugh at the author’s riddles.

Well written book and relevant topics. Impressive the many social subjects this book touches on. From teenage runaways to loneliness in senior citizens.

Give the 3rd book in this awesome series a go & you will not be disappointed.

About the ending

Potential spoiler ahead - the ending is not bad but it feels incomplete. It’s just slightly less buttoned up than the previous two books. I will say it’s not unusual for details to be made clear in the next novel (Ben from skies of ashes for example).

Waited to review until...

I finished the series. This is an AWESOME detective series and I hope the author continues Detective Lou Norton's story. I loved the deep character development just as much as the detailed detective work. The plot twists are interesting and some keep you guessing until the end. Norton & Taggert's partnership is fun to listen to, and I'm dying to hear how it goes with Sam & Lou! Highly recommended!

The build up

Slow start but worth the read. The characters are familiar from other of the author's novels.
