About this listen

Treasure Island must be the most enthralling adventure book ever written. As we listen to the voice of Jim Hawkins telling his extraordinary tale, and later that of his companion, Dr. Livesey, we are plunged into a world of pirates, buried treasure, mutiny, and deceit. We meet Billy Bones, Blind Pew, Black Dog, and, of course, the charming buccaneer Long John Silver. The action and adventure never falter, and the spell of this enduring story is sustained until the very last word.

A brilliant performance of a classic!

Wow! This is the quintessential pirate. It has stood the test of time and is still as accessible and entertaining as it was centuries ago.

What made this version special was the outstanding performance by Jasper Britton. This was my first experience with this narrator, and his inflections, voices, and cadence were flawless. It really made for an exciting listen and I will definitely search out more of his performances.

So, even if you read this years ago, give it a listen. I think you'll find this format and narrator brings the story to life like never before.

Boy's Dream

What did you love best about Treasure Island?

This story is what every little boy dreams of, discovering buried treasure, pirates and adventure.

What does Jasper Britton bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

He did an excellent job conveying the attitudes and voices of the different characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

As a boy, he begins his adventure with bravery for family and a curiosity of the danger of the guest in his family's inn... hooked from there on.

Great Narration and you may lay to that!

It's a classic for a reason. But what really made this great for me was the narration. The pace and pitch perfect for every scene. Character voices so distinct and varied you could put a face to them easily. I had no idea a "pirate" book could be so good and fun to listen to. I listened to it two times in a row and know I will still listen again in the future. The story was great and I get a kick out the "pirate" idioms. No wonder there's an offical Speak Like A Pirate Day (September 19).

Excellent narration!

What made the experience of listening to Treasure Island the most enjoyable?

It's a classic! Also, this is the quintessential "boys' adventure". Many years after I read it in school, Treasure Island hasn't aged one bit.

What does Jasper Britton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Britton is an amazing narrator for Treasure Island. He somehow manages to create unique voices for each of the characters, which is quite amazing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Nothing in particular. Even thoughI know the book almost by heart, listening to it is another experience altogether.

Any additional comments?

This is a great book to have in your library. If you're like me and enjoy classic literature, this should be your cup of tea.

Classic Indeed

I read this while in high school many years ago and then saw it in the movies. It was fun then but now it is exhilerating because after years of learning the English language and its usage, I find it so much more meaningful and a great book most assured. The narration most definitely added to the experience.

Terrific narrator for a terrific story!

I bought this audio book on a whim brought on by nostalgia, and boy was I glad I did! I haven't read Treasure Island since I was a boy and couldn't really remember how the story went or who the characters were aside from the boy and pirate cook. First off, Jasper Britton did an amazing job with narration - he has a good range of voices and does "pirate talk" perfectly. The story was better than I remember and I had totally forgotten about Gunn and the captain of the ship! Highly recommended for both a great story and fantastic narrator!

Excellent performance

The wonderful narration of this classic pirate tale added a great deal to the story. The other reviewers covered the main points, but I will mention one thing. When I first started listening, it seemed as if the narrator was talking faster than humanly possible. The I-phone app allows you to slow the speed down to 75% and at that rate the pace was perfect. There was a little reverberation echo, but I am guessing the publisher sped up the recording a bit to get it to fit on a certain number of CDs when it was first distributed. Just slow it down if you have trouble keeping up, This was the first book where I experienced that over-clocked sensation.

Pure pleasure

A book revisited from my youth, and it did not disappoint--surely one of the great adventure stories of all time. Britton is a truly superlative narrator, a master of voices and dialects; I'll download other books based on his narration alone.
