About this listen

#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson expands his Cosmere universe shared by The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn with a new standalone novel for everyone who loved The Princess Bride. Narrated by Michael Kramer.

The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Note from Brandon:

I started writing this in secret, as a novel just for my wife. She urged me to share it with the world—and alongside three other secret novels, with the support of readers worldwide it grew into the biggest Kickstarter campaign of all time. I’m excited to present this first book to you at last: a different type of Brandon Sanderson story, one I wrote when there were no time constraints, no expectations, and no limits on my imagination. Come be part of the magic.

Another great Sanderson book!

As an avid fantasy reader, Brandon Sanderson is my favorite writer in the genre. I have never read anything by him I haven’t liked. Tress and the Emerald Sea is no different. Sanderson’s world building is wonderful as ever, and I enjoyed following Tress on her adventure and following her relationships with those around her. The themes in this novel are timeless, a coming of age story where the character learns her worth in the world around her and the importance of love and compassion. I only deducted 1 star from the story because I found some of the narrator (Hoid) “one-liners” a bit wearing and the narrator character somewhat unlikeable. Of course, this may be exactly what Sanderson was going for, and like all people, not all personalities will mesh well. I didn’t mesh well with the narrator.
Kramer is always an excellent narrator and I always enjoy listening to the books he reads.

This book, oh my

Absolutely in love with this book. I bought it the day it came out, ironically, as I was having a bit of riders block writing my own book. There is not one single thing that I would complain about when it comes to this book. The narration is above and beyond the content, pacing character development, and everything in between is out of this world. The moons themselves would struggle to oppose the vibrancy with which this book is written. I could not recommend it enough.

Sanderson Always Delivers

Takes a bit to get into but before you know it...you are inside the story with the characters.

Fun but heartfelt

This story was a really fun listen. The characters were developed nicely and the pace was perfect. The narrator’s performance held the tone wonderfully.

All the usual quality packed into a small package

Another great story by Brandon. Really hard to top his character and world development. Michael Kramer as the voice as amazing as always, but the perspective as Wit was perfect for a short tale.

Worldbuilding with character development and humor

If you're going to write this kind of book, you have to do it well, or it will come out cloying, goofy, irritating, and/or childish. I'm not a diehard Sanderson fan (or at least I wasn't) so I went into this book with only the final Wheel of Time books to go by. But I was so impressed with this book that I find myself reading the third Secret Projects book in a row! Sanderson's imagination is completely delightful. He builds intricate worlds and then just tosses them away--he can always build another, equally as engaging! Tress and the band of quirky characters in this book are so alien to the human experience, and yet relatable on a deeper level. I still have trouble imagining the spore seas, but I could completely relate to Tress's desire to please everyone, to never make a fuss, and enjoyed watching her change. Anyone who enjoys character-driven novels, fantasy settings, and humor will enjoy this book. Genuinely clever, funny fantasy books are hard to come by, and this is one of them!

Whimsical

Great little Sanderson book. It felt pure and honest and full of love! The narration from one of our favorite cosmere interloper was so refreshing and fun. Highly recommend!
