About this listen

Homeless, orphaned, and uncertain, Rose resorts to deception to aid in her destiny. In the white man’s world, Rose Baker’s adventurous nature had been a source of pain to her mother and frowned on by everyone but her father. And he was now dead. Orphaned on the Bozeman Trail, Rose desperately needed to find a way to survive in a time and place that was not ready for a woman like her. Deception would not have been her first choice, but if it was the only way for her to hunt and fish and oversee her own destiny, what other choice was there?

As she shed her frills and dawned her father’s pants, Rose began her life of deception as a two-spirit being. Her plot was working, and the Nez Perce tribe accepted her for whom she pretended to be. Everything could have been perfect. If only she had not fallen in love with her rescuer, Five Wounds. Would the deception that saved her now destroy her happiness forever?

Sweet

I love that they focused on the spirit both mentally, physically, and emotionally as well as religiously. Having a strong confident partner helps you maintain that inner strength. The narrator was perfect for the story and wouldn’t mind hearing her read more. Overall, it was perfect.

Great story!

There was a tenderness about it that spoke to my heart. The description thru out the story made me feel as if I were in Roses shoes, right there experiencing the joy, pain, and deep spirituality that her character exhibited. I look forward to hearing more from this fresh, innovative author. The narration was a little choppy but over all kept me invested in the story. great job!

Good story!

This book started out so wonderfully as a story about the settlers trek west, but slowly devolved into something I can only call a mess. Five Wounds is the scout traveling with Rose Baker's family, He is impressed with Rose and tries to stay close to her, even though he knows it could be dangerous. As they cross to the west, things are going well, until her family are killed. Staying by Five Wounds' side, Rose is comfortable with him, so much so that she dreams of something more. Out of the blue, Five Wounds tells her that his people honor and respect two spirits. I've only heard the term and shouldn't have had to look it up. It should have been in the author's notes because the definitions vary. He suggests that she's gay? But it's a deception, a way to allow her to both hunt and cook and to still be honored by his people. Then the young women, sister wives of the elderly leader, want her, but so does Five Wounds. He thought she was gay, but he wanted her for himself and it turned into a train wreck. This story has good bones, but it has to be tighted up and edited for continuity.
Cindy Guinn Martin did an excellent job with the narration. Her voice is clear and dynamic, well-paced and emotive and brings each of the characters to life.
