About this listen

Hold tight...things are about to get bumpy.

In his oppressively small 10x10 cell at the Norfolk Naval Station’s Brig, Captain Galvin Quintos sits awaiting his impending court-martial when he's unexpectedly contacted by Fleet Commander Admiral Block. He’s proposing an off-book, secret operation, coming at the request of the Pleidian Weonan Empress Shawlee Tee.

For Quintos, telling Shawlee “no” was never an option. Unfortunately, according to the admiral, this very well could be a mission of no return. The war with the Grish has turned desperate, and the Alliance is tallying far more losses than wins. To complicate matters, all other US Space-Navy warship assets have been deployed to various hot spots within the quadrant. As for the mission, Fleet Commander Twinwon and his crew are on the run from a fleet of 18 Grish Warships somewhere out within the farthest reaches of frontier space. The Empress knows she has no right to ask, but she has no one else to turn to - she needs Quintos and the USS Hamilton’s crew - and she needs them now. Sure, this rescue may be coming too late, but no one ever said being a hero was easy.

First problem: How the hell will Quintos escape from a Norfolk high-security detention facility?

Slightly confused like most of the characters seem to be.

As many have pointed out there are some glaring ways the tech could be used to massively help our heroes. This would help their intelligence and ours in this book. This feels like a set up book. We need bigger villains so our humans need some upgrades and instead of a magic maguffin to fix this or an ancient progenitor race, we have this book try to get us there but not too fast. We still need 23rd century characters who still know all about 20th century movies and Sci fi and yet aren't smart enough to follow their examples.

Still I have still enjoyed letting go of reality and enjoying the previous books but this book is challenging. As another reviewer said it was frustrating as a reader. Another wondered if we had a new author. I wondered too because our characters don't seem to act right in this book. They were caring passionate flawed characters before. Now they seem to be cold and crass. They don't value life like they did. Characters I did like are barely tolerable now. Those who were barely tolerable are ones I can't stand. I can feel the captain's frustrations and understand why he feels like he does and yet he puts up with bad people around him. He is infatuated with a horrible character. There is no one more conceited or a know-it-all than this character. I try to like them. They seem to care and really ruin it all over again in this book.

Last James Patrick Cronin is still one of my favorite narrators. He does a great job with this book. It's a shame we don't have a good Irish accent. I will get the next book because it's still a better than average story and I want to see the characters redeemed. Not every book can be perfect. Its still fun and hopefully we get our characters back making good decisions that justify not always following the rules.

I got a kick out of this.

While I have read some negative reviews about the previous book in the series, this is meant to be entertainment. This is meant to be semi-serious with humor. I was entertained and getting ready to listen to USS Jefferson.

spoiler/question

hate being nit pickey... but just throwing something out there, to the author maybe?

anyways, sometbing that bothered me mid way thru the book, if u can precisely teliport anything as in, lipstick a helment, even people to and from an enemy ship... why send your soldiers at all ? why not send a dozen of those "smart missles " into the enemy ship? -boom call it a day
or, 1 more idea, once an enemy is identified, why not just start beaming all of the COs of the bridge, drop them in space and just fly away? lol Just me thinking out loud. but regardless, great read.

Stretching things a bit here.

A mostly enjoyable listen, but somewhat shaky in the details and implausable at times. Still, a fun story.

McGinnis Succeeded Agan

It’s a bit hard to review this book, without spoiling the most recent events in the series. I will say that this book had it all. Secret, missions, major battles, lustful conflicts, new technologies, and a bittersweet ending.

As usual, James Patrick Cronin Did an excellent job of narrating. This series just wouldn’t be the same without his wonderful dynamic method of reading. He makes it seem like there are many narrators, not just one. Between the writing, and narration, USS Hamilton creates an amazing movie in one’s head.

I would like to have seen all of the conflicts resolved, but I’m assuming that the sequel will back step, and tie up some conflicts. This book definitely ended in a way that begs for a good sequel. I’m looking forward to starting that.

This is a great addition to the series, and I definitely recommend it to any science fiction fan.

loved all three of the Hamilton Books. Each got better. I was sad when I finished the last book.

Truly remarkable writer and narrator

This series I've listened to is one of the best, the reality of the scenes and action are unparallel. It works be a wonderful series to watch on Netflix, Prime, Hulu or many of these other streaming avenues. Looking forward to the next book.
