Publisher's summary

Contrary to popular belief, addiction isn't a conscious choice. It's a chronic illness, like diabetes or asthma, that responds to treatment and deserves compassion. And yet, too many people expect their loved ones to simply recover on their own without interventions. Drawing on peer-reviewed research and decades of expertise, Dr. Nzinga Harrison reveals the factors that predict one's risk for addiction: biology and heritability, childhood experience, physical environment, injuries and health conditions, discrimination, and cultural influence. With revelatory anecdotes and sobering data, Un-Addiction guides listeners to unlearn what they think they know about substance use, undo stigma surrounding addiction, and uncover critical conversations that could end the epidemic.

Wow! So insightful. Should be required reading.

Wow! This book is so insightful. I learned so much and unlearned even more. Dr. Harrison teaches about understand substance use disorders and their risk factors. She illuminates the need for compassion and inspires empathy.

This book should be required reading for physicians, parents, and every high school student.

These time stamps are worth visiting and revisiting. Some have guidance—including sample actual words—on how to talk to your kids. Some are other gems worth hearing over and over.

Absolutely loved this book. I’ve done a lot of research on addiction but this book has new ways to view addiction, and a positive spin on how to speak to addicts.

Genuinely Life-Saving Potential, Warm & Funny

A really fresh take on the culture of substance use disorder. Very caring, yet meticulous and solidly evidence-based. 75% of U.S. residents with substance use disorder haven't received treatment! What a disaster, but Dr. Nzinga Harris has a plan. Let's get on board. :)

Too much woke discussion.

Too much on race vs addiction. False advertising with title. If you want a lecture on micro aggressions go for it!
