About this listen

Every year for two decades, David Payne invites his five closest college friends to travel with him on a weeklong humanitarian mission. And each year, they are too busy. This year, however, when David's funeral reunites them, they decide to fulfill his mission to a far-flung Pacific island. But something unplanned and mind-boggling occurs.

Christy Award-winning author Angela Hunt delivers an unforgettable, critically acclaimed tale that explores how materialism, beauty, and prestige often mask reality.

Critic reviews

"Hunt excels at reminding Christian readers that God judges petty sins the same as heinous ones, and that being a 'good person' outwardly often hides an interior life that is far from pure." (Publishers Weekly)
"An accelerating sense of menace." (Booklist)

Something Different

It's hard to say what I think of this book. It took awhile to get into and understand each character. While this book kept me listening because I wanted to know what was going on, I was rather disturbed when I did finally understand. I agree with the other review that says "makes you think."

A Movie

Wow! Fabulous story that makes you think - a lot. Well written and told. This should be a movie.

great!

This book was hard to follow with all the different characters, at first, but stay with it. I have a bad memory especially with names. Once I got them down it was smooth sailing! I enjoyed this very much. If you want a story that will open your eyes get this one!

Very Surprising

The plot to this was not what I thought at first. It slowly dawned on me that things were not as they seemed at first but it still took a while to figure out what was real and what wasn't. This really isn't about a group of friends fulfilling a former classmate's dreams. It is about each of them confronting their own demons in a very unusual setting.

Unexpected

This book kept surprising me. Twists and turns that I didn't expect. Each one made me stop and think. It was powerful and stimulating.

mysterious and gripping and life choices

narrator was great. I believe detail as to what happened on the boat in the Pacific is necessary. overall the story makes you think about your thoughts and motives in life and making sure our life is right with Christ in our daily walk

A soap opera.

A soap opera with unattractive characters that were more caricatures than unique. The writing banged me over the head rather than treating me as someone with imagination. The "inner voices" of the characters came off as simplistic and naive.

The narration was overwrought.

Obviously some like this type of book, but for myself, who loves Richard Russo, James Lee Burke or TC Boyle I was left feeling like I watched a soap opera rather than a good movie.
