About this listen

Daryn Austin grew up dreaming of becoming the first female president of the United States. In November, she and Craig Parker win the national election and Daryn moves into the vice presidential mansion. Months later, destiny propels Daryn to the pinnacle of power when Parker dies unexpectedly. But Daryn's grand plans to implement real change in American society begin to crumble when she nominates the brilliant lawyer she had loved while attending law school to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court. Daryn finds herself in an emotionally charged battle of wills from which neither can escape unscathed.

Enjoyed it despite myself!

An unexpected woman POTUS must adjust and also gather advisors and colleagues she can trust. The most significant is a man she once loved who has always kept to the most honest agenda. That's just the beginning, and the tale moves forward like a train gathering steam and racing forward. Plot twists keep you reading onward when you think you ought to go to bed for the night. All this without dishonor or erotica. Excellent read!
Kathy Poelker is the right fit for this book and provides an excellent voice performance, once again! Blessed with a reader's voice quality, she brings the characters to life beyond the author's efforts.
A gift from a friend.

Base By The Content of Character NOT Her Gender

Judge By The Content of Her Character NOT Her Skin Color, Gender, etc. ~Paraphrasing MLK Jr.

Daryn has been a planner her entire life, it started when she was a little girl and her father became the governor of Georgia - from that day on she knew that one day she would become president.

While serving as the first female vice president, events play out and she must be sworn in as president.

As she is planning her next 10 years as POTUS (two years because she had to replace the president midterm does, not count toward the two for term limits) one of her first thoughts of Paul? Her lover and closest confidant when they went to college together. They parted ways when she had the opportunity to pursue her political life, thus choosing it over him. Now that she is in power she finagles a way to get the Miami-based lawyer (now married with a 16 college age daughter himself.)

What happens next is a stunning account of power, betrayal, sacrifice, action, forgiveness, redemption and twists and turns that kept this listener hanging on to every word.

The plot and the effects are like ripples in the water, once a stone has been tossed in . Each decision has consequences good or bad that are well-written and clear. One has to pay attention and each ripple will make sense.

I really hope that this author will continue to write. I plan to look her up as soon as I finish this review. If there are any other titles on audible I will add them to my WishList or go ahead and use the credit.

The narration was very good. The only part of the performance that was a bit off was the Hispanic accent for Paul. But with an array of characters from FBI to Supreme Court justices, receptionist, elderly parents, etc. it really was a great performance overall.

Notes: This is where I usually write about warnings that may offend, but there are only innuendos and no strong language, it took nothing away from this thriller. It was rather refreshing to listen to something in the political/thriller genre without those things.

There are 2 disturbing scenes near the end where there is violence. Both are described in pretty general terms so it is not too gruesome.

---> I appreciate that you took the time to read my review. I find that reviews help me in deciding whether or not to purchase a books, especially new authors or performers. Sometimes they are helpful and sometimes they're not. If you found this review helpful would you take a moment and select 'YES' below the next paragraph?

Feel free to follow me on Audible. My favorite books are contemporary romance and books by authors like Vince Flynn who wrote counter-terrorism, thrillers. However, you will find reviews from all genres that have asked me to listen for a review.

Authors & narrators, please feel free to take my review to any other media that you would like. Please include "review from DK via Audible" and it links back to this site. Thanks!

Sad narrator.

The story line is great, but it's hard to listen because the narrator sounds like a robot or mechanical recording....
Sad..

Avoid narrators with strong regional accents….

I think she must be from Michigan? Either way, she’s robotic and has a distinctive accent that grates on the ears. Ruined what was otherwise a great story.

A Woman Prez

Any additional comments?

The plot is full with political intrigue, romance, and eventually redeemed lives, Angela Hunt has once again written a great page turning novel. Suspense from beginning to end.

Odd Story line

The narrator was good but the story was odd. The ending kind of left you hanging and wondering "What? "

Hooked from the start!

If you could sum up The Justice in three words, what would they be?

realistic piercing genuine

Who was your favorite character and why?

Daryn Austin because she is a well-rounded character who grows and changes in a realistic way as the story progresses. She starts out ambitious and competent, but unable to to do the good she imagines as a side-lined vice president. After she assumes the presidency, she starts to fulfill her potential, but then gradually gets sucked into the political quagmire and starts making making questionable choices. No one is all good or all bad, and you can always change direction at any time, as this character illustrates.

Which character – as performed by Kathy Poelker – was your favorite?

Daryn Austin. Kathy ably calls out all the nuances of Daryn's hopes, dreams, fears, anger, pain, loneliness, ruthlessness, desperation, excitement, and ambition. It's so easy to buttonhole a character and play him or her that same way, regardless of the changing circumstances, but this narrator doesn't fall into this trap with any of the characters. Her portrayal evolves even as the character does.

Any additional comments?

Very enjoyable Christian fiction, played out on the national stage, with nuggets we can apply to our own lives!
