About this listen

Love and loss are in the air as the almond blossom falls.

Milla has always felt alone in the world. The only child of a distant mother, she has no other family, and even her forthcoming marriage to Paul feels more like settling than true romance. But then a letter arrives, announcing that a Spanish grandmother she knew nothing about has recently died and left her a small shop in Mallorca.

Milla is confused and hurt, but determined to uncover the truth. She travels to Palma, where she is enchanted by the beauty of the old town in springtime. At the shop she now owns, she meets Leandro, a handsome local who helps her piece together the story of her grandmother, Abbi. But it’s a story full of unexpected secrets, of hidden love and bitter betrayal, and it challenges everything Milla thought she knew about her family - and herself.

Faced with these new truths, Milla has a difficult choice to make. Will she go back to Paul and be the person she was before, or follow her heart on a blossom-strewn island?

Too many accents

This story was okay, but there were too many accents, German, Spanish, other?? It was very hard to distinguish the female and male characters during narration. The narrator spoke just about every sentence as a dramatic stage reading which was very annoying. The story itself included more "weak" women who kept secrets without knowing the whole truth.

not for me

This was a bit a trial to get thru. I found the narration challenging, and while I might listen to this narrator again, I felt there was discord between the story and narration. There are two stories that unfold, past and present, and the author does a good job keeping the reader on track. Even though the mystery was interesting enough, the characters were just too unlikable and tiresome for me to care much about. This is not an awful book, just not as good as I'd hoped.

A wonderful journey

I loved this story of flawed yet loving people. Trying to discover who they are and why, learning to let go of anger, loving each other, unearthing some horrible things that happened during horrible times, antisemitism, hatred, sexual assault,, rape as if it was no big deal,, lies and lots of discovery along the way. I am sad it ended. It was a wonderful written family saga. This is my favorite book I've listened to in quite some time. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
