About this listen

Restless with the familiarity of her Alabama home, Ellie Fields accepts a teaching job in a tiny Louisiana town deep in bayou country. Though rightfully suspicious of outsiders, who have threatened both their language and their culture, most of the people in tiny Bernadette, Louisiana, come to appreciate the young and idealistic schoolteacher as a boon to the town. She's soon teaching just about everyone - and coming up against opposition from both the school board and a politician with ulterior motives.

Acclimating to a whole new world, Ellie meets a lonely but intriguing Cajun fisherman named Raphe who introduces her to the legendary white alligator that haunts these waters. Raphe and Ellie have barely found their way to each other when a huge bounty is offered for the elusive gator, bringing about a shocking turn of events that will test their love and their will to right a terrible wrong.

A master of the Southern novel, Valerie Fraser Luesse invites you to enter the sultry swamps of Louisiana in a story that illuminates the struggle for the heart and soul of the bayou.

Great story. Makes me want this kind of community to live in. Makes me homesick for a home that is no longer there.

I smiled for most of the book.

Enjoyed being transported to another place and time. The narrator raider did a great job. Some of the themes were not thoroughly explored in the story, but it was a light and enjoyable read.

The story itself was sweet. I feel like it really didn’t pick up speed until the last couple hours. I would have liked to know a little more back story of some of the minor characters like Doc, the senator, Boone, & Luttrell. Unfortunately, the narrator could have benefited from more research on how to pronounce Southern Louisiana slang. Being from Louisiana myself, it grated on my nerves a bit to hear the mispronunciations. And the Southern drawl she used was not quite a Louisiana or Alabama accent.

Sweet Story

I loved being in the Bayou with Ellie & Raphe watching them grow and discovering exactly what they never knew they wanted. Lussee’s descriptions of the Cajun personalities are pure joy- I wish there truly were a Bernadette to experience!

Joyful- Southern-Perfect Summer Read
