About this listen

In Undercurrents, the 11th Faye Longchamp Mystery, Faye has traveled to Memphis, a city steeped in music, poverty, history, and the smoky tang of barbecue. She's there working alone to do an assessment of a site, welcome work for her small archaeological consulting firm.

When Faye spies a child too young to be wandering along a creek alone, she follows the girl. A day later she uncovers a dying woman, buried alive near a spot where Kali might well be hiding. Nobody would blame Faye for running hard, but she can't make herself leave Kali, the woman's now-orphaned daughter, who might be in danger. She's not welcomed by the people in Kali's struggling community, nor by the police working the crime. Yet she stays, for Kali, and for the bereaved who need her to communicate their fears to a police department that they trust even less than they trust Faye.

When they confide rumors of other women beaten to death by a man so obsessed with burial that he places fresh flowers in their cold hands, Faye begs the police to widen the investigation to seek a serial killer. They refuse. Faye's gut is telling her that a monster is stalking Memphis, endangering the child she has come to love. If the police can't catch him, then she will have no choice but to try to find him herself.

Wow, the suspense in this story had me on edge and fearful from the very beginning! I was very surprised by every twist and turn in the plot. Well done! A great listen! PS, I'm still a little jittery!

Fear and suspense from the beginning

Thank you for this book. I read all the others in the series, but this one really hits home as a black woman in America. Thank you for telling our story in all of its complexity and nuance. Thank you!

have loved all of the others, but this one got too disturbing for me to finish, listen to last chapters to see how Kalie ended up, but just couldn't do scary.

Beginning too disturbing for me

The books in this series are always enjoyable and engaging. The characters are well written and engaging. The story is always well developed and entertaining. The only problem I had with this book is that Joe does not play a bigger role. The relationship between Faye and Joe is almost as interesting as the mystery. I look forward to the next book.

This was the first Faye Longchamp book that I listened to, so I had downloaded all of the other books in the series. They've all great, and I would highly recommend listening to them in order. A simple Google search made sure that I had the order correct. Looking forward to listening to the next one.

Excellent

I loved the story and I love being along for the ride in Faye and Joe’s life. I wish she gave us more history about Memphis and as much as the serial killer aspect intrigued me, what makes her story unique is her delve into history, particularly the history of slaves and native Americans. As a black woman, when talking about the treatment by police of black men and of myself it’s just for lack of a better term, “too soon”. That aspect, may come off too preachy to your white readers or even too sanctimonious and insensitive to your black readers. And I am a political junky. However I loved the suspense of if and I curious to find out how many murders like that of Freda’s could actually be going on across the US today. Keep bringing more Longchamp stories.

I love Faye Lonchamp

Finally! I love these stories! I love Fay and Joe. The story lines are always interesting and the characters engaging. It’s nice to read books about “real” people without all that sex (and sexes) violence and foul language. I hope Mary Anna Evans continues writing for a very long time

Wonderful!
