About this listen

A young woman is dumped, injured and unconscious, in a private hospital's parking lot. She is an amnesiac with no memory prior to her discovery by hospital personnel. Detective Inspector Peter Diamond of the Bath homicide squad is unwilling to become involved. He has other, more important cases to solve: a woman has plunged to her death from the roof of a local landmark while half the young people of Bath partied below, and an elderly farmer has shot himself.

Are these apparent suicides what they seem, or are there sinister forces at work? And might the amnesiac woman hold the key to both cases?

Critic reviews

"Such a tangled plot would snare an author of less skill, but Lovesey maintains virtuosic control and delivers an unmistakable highlight in a long career already well-garlanded with awards and acclaim." ( Publishers Weekly)

I love Peter Lovesey.

Delight to read from start to finish, and the narrator was spot on! He caught on to every nuance.

Not the best.

This is the third time I have come across a reader who always says "a" to rhyme with "hay" instead of "fluff". It drives you crazy. Readers must STOP doing this. Another reader always said "thee" for "the", never "thuh" which is how most of us pronounce "the".
The story is not like most Peter Diamond books, in that it is mostly bout the protagonist, less about the detection. Not the best, but we addicts will accept anything with Peter Diamond in it.

Really?

So a woman protects an innocent young woman by hiding her from a killer. But had she turned him into the police in the first place, another young woman’s life would have been spared. So why does Diamond tell her she saved Rose his life? It’s ridiculous. In what possible way does this make sense?

This one is a winner!

The characters are very real with a sprinkling of humor that is welcome. The story is complex enough to keep your attention.

Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am about to embark on the next one!! Great characters, intriguing mysteries, overall for me 5/5! Always something new, something completely unexpected! The narrator for these audiobooks is also superb!

Not my favorite

I love Peter Lovesey and his Peter Diamond but this story went up and down in my interest. I definitely prefer the narrator of his later books.

Another winner…

I’m a Peter Lovesey fan — of all his series. But I’m especially fond of Peter Diamond’s adventures in Bath. I’ve read all of them and now I’m working my way through the audio versions. This was a worthy addition.

Healy is not the right narrator for this book

This is my 14th listen of the Peter Diamond series. Healy’s narration pales compared to Simon Prebble’s. Healy does a poor job of switching back and forth between character voices. His voice modulation is all over the place.
Isolating on the story itself, it’s another masterfully executed detective story. Lovesey knows how to weave a story that keeps you interested and invested in the outcome. I highly recommend the whole series.

Another involving mystery by Peter Lovesey

This character is so very human, flaws and all. Makes me laugh sometimes; sometimes exasperating. And the mystery was another one that kept me guessing. The narrator has some odd pronunciation quirks but is generally good; no everyone is Simon Prebble.
