Story
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

When I was a newbie traveler, I made many mistakes, forgot to take essential items, and just made some bad choices. Over the years, through experience and learning from others, I have learned what you need to do to travel as safely as possible, what essential items to take, how to take care of your health, and how to make the most of your trip.

Follow New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach - but be careful not to trip - as she weaves through personal anecdotes and everyday musings riddled with her uncanny wit and amazingly analytical eye. These essays, which found a well-deserved home within the pages of Reader's Digest as the column "My Planet," detail the inner workings of hypochondriacs, hoarders, and compulsive cheapskates. (Did we mention neurotic interior designers and professional list makers?) For Roach, humor is hidden in the most unlikely places, which means that nothing is off limits.

Story
Follow New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach - but be careful not to trip - as she weaves through personal anecdotes and everyday musings riddled with her uncanny wit and amazingly analytical eye. These essays, which found a well-deserved home within the pages of Reader's Digest as the column "My Planet," detail the inner workings of hypochondriacs, hoarders, and compulsive cheapskates. (Did we mention neurotic interior designers and professional list makers?) For Roach, humor is hidden in the most unlikely places, which means that nothing is off limits.

In Made in America, Bryson de-mythologizes his native land, explaining how a dusty hamlet with neither woods nor holly became Hollywood, how the Wild West wasn't won, why Americans say 'lootenant' and 'Toosday', how Americans were eating junk food long before the word itself was cooked up, as well as exposing the true origins of the G-string, the original $64,000 question, and Dr Kellogg of cornflakes fame.

The “mountain men” were the hunters and trappers who fiercely strode the Rocky Mountains in the early to mid-1800s. They braved the elements in search of the skins of beavers and other wild animals, to sell or barter for goods. The lifestyle of the mountain men could be harsh, existing as they did among animals, and spending most of their days and nights living and camping out in the great unexplored wilds of the Rockies.

Interesting ideas
The author's core premise is true, the USA is obsessed with possessions we don't need. We've been duped by the mad men of advertising. The author shows how it is possible to live full time in a van. While it might not be as comfortable as a house, he shows just how little we really need, and the lifestyle sounds tempting. Thus, he makes his point regarding possessions, in short, they don't make us happy, regardless of what the mad men want you to believe.
The narrator was a little flat, thus the four star rating.

This book changed my life. Absolutely brilliant.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
YES! The book is still valuable even if you are not interested in living in a van. This book gave me the courage to sell my house, car, and most of my possessions and live a whole new life. I have been traveling around Asia having the time of my life.
What did you like best about this story?
The philosophy of the author is a breath of fresh air. I can't do it justice by describing it. If you feel jaded by overwork, consumerism, and the modern lifestyle, you need this book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. I listened to it many times on repeat. I told all my friends about it but they thought I was crazy. Just listen for yourself.
Any additional comments?
The author is super friendly and answers questions and is genuinely interested in hearing about experiences of the reader. This book changed my outlook on life in a way that no other book ever has. EVEN IF YOU DONT WANT TO LIVE IN A VAN this book is just chock full of wisdom and unique ideas.

Great Ideas on how to live well on less money
I've been drawing close to retirement and have decided to fulltime RV. I wish I had come across this book 40 years ago. I would have avoided all the hassles of keeping up with the Joneses and could have lived simply and free.
With the direction the economy is heading, this is the advice I will give to my grandchildren.
I am comprising with my wife for now by buying a van to pull a small travel trailer for full timing for now. Hopefully we can move to just using the van in the future.
Thank you Jason!

Captivated by the lifestyle; less so by the author
Who hasn't idolized Thoreau and the wandering traditions? Who isn't captivated by the vagabond/vanabode lifestyle? From the Romani wagons to surfer vans, the thought of being on the move, unfettered, and on your way to wherever you want to be is the very essence, for many of us, of the ideal life. It's the theory that is the foundation of this book. In fact, reflection on this philosophy is a goodly sized portion of the book. Not particularly practical information, not new or inventive in any way, but a nice reflection on the ideals that brought most of us to the book in the first place. And it did recharge my flagging sense of idealism. (three stars!)
As for the rest of the content in the book, there are more practical manuals out there that offer much more practical advice, but this book does offer a good jumping off point. My biggest problem with it is the author. I found him disturbing. The worst thing about the poor narrator was how sane and intelligent he made the author sound. Much more sane and intelligent than much of the writing lead me to believe.
Primary above all other sins is Jason Odom's delusion and insistence that he created this lifestyle. (CREATED, I tell you!) It is his invention, his brainchild, his gift to the world. Nevermind those gypsies or surfer dudes or any of the other peoples who have wandered in states of wonder for millenia. Never mind the RVs, the camper vans, or even those road trips I took camping out in the back of my Prius. Sorry folks, all those who wandered before were lost. Jason's the man with the plan. And if his godly ascension to that throne doesn't capture you, give his chapter on sex a chance. Downright creepy. Seriously, folks. Eek.

Good information presented in a direct way
Jason Odom has his opinions and is eager to tell you how you should do this van living lifestyle. He does have good information and resources!!! It was worth the listen. I’m interested in van camping in the future. But he can’t convince me I won’t enjoy cruises, because I sure do! Lol. Some opinions could have been left out. Plus his sex poem could have been left for only his wife in my opinion. But I didn’t get too bother by this stuff to lose perspective of the great parts. I wish expenses like medical coverage were talked about. This is a large expense most people don’t want to drop and it clearly wasn’t included in the budget section. It does vary by person but it’s also a more necessary evil unlike materialistic possessions.
Overall it is a great and unique book and I’m glad I purchased it. I will for sure be referencing it when I decide to van camp.
