About this listen

After the publication of his wildly successful memoir, Blue Like Jazz, Donald Miller's life began to stall. During what should have been the height of his success, he found himself avoiding responsibility and even questioning the meaning of life. But when two producers proposed turning his memoir into a movie, Miller found himself launched into a new story filled with risk, possibility, beauty, and meaning.

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years chronicles Miller's rare opportunity to edit his life into a great story and to reinvent himself so nobody shrugs their shoulders when the credits roll. When his producers begin fictionalizing Don's life for the film—changing a meandering memoir into a structured narrative—the real-life Don starts a journey to make his actual life into a better story.

In this book, we have a front-row seat to Miller's journey—from sleeping all day to riding his bike across America, from living in romantic daydreams to facing love head-on, from wasting his money to founding a life-changing nonprofit.

Guided by a host of outlandish but very real characters, Miller teaches us:

  • Why God hasn't fixed us yet
  • The power of speaking something into nothing
  • The redemptive beauty that can come from tragic circumstances
  • How to get a second chance at life the first time around

Through heart-wrenching honesty and hilarious self-inspection, Miller takes listeners through the life that emerges when it turns from boring reality into a meaningful narrative.

This book is worth reading more than once.

I told my husband that this book was making me want to change my life as I was reading it and he asked me "How do you want to change your life?" I answered that no, my life is wonderful, and my goals haven't changed, but the way I live it all could be made better. In the end, I didn't have words for it. But whatever this feeling is, it's good. The book is full of gems and I was writing them down as I read. Uplifting is the right word for it, I think.

Really makes you think about your life story

Great listen! This book really made me consider what story is my life writing. What will be the stories others share about me when I am no longer around. This is not a religious book. Enjoy it and see if it gets you thinking.

very unique

struggle to listen to at first, truly enjoyed and will listen to it a couple more times. The story viewpoint was motivating/inspiring to me. Healthy reminder to always look for progression and enjoy the ups and downs within the path.

Inspiring and thought provoking

It was wonderful. Best to be preceded with Blue Like Jazz and followed with Love Does, Bob Goff.

Fantastic Story Telling

It’s a fantastic book. I really appreciated his ability to tell the story, express his feeling and provide us with the things he learned on his journey. I also really enjoyed the concept of rewriting your story...

Has Changed My Life!

I have read or listened to this book multiple times, and every time it challenges me to make radical changes to live an even better story. It's given me the courage to change jobs, move across the country to places I didn't know anyone, and helped me continue forward in times I wanted to give up. I owe Donald, and my friend Michelle who gave me my first copy, so much for this epic story I am living. ❤

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

This book just ended and I’m fighting back tears, unsuccessfully. I don’t know exactly what drew me in; probably that it’s a really good story about living a really good story. I have recommended this to a young friend of mine who is struggling with suffering and wondering if God is good. In an unromantic and non-religious God-loving way, Miller answers this question. I’m going to start listening to this book again as soon as I jump in the car.
