About this listen

After the publication of his wildly successful memoir, Blue Like Jazz, Donald Miller's life began to stall. During what should have been the height of his success, he found himself avoiding responsibility and even questioning the meaning of life. But when two producers proposed turning his memoir into a movie, Miller found himself launched into a new story filled with risk, possibility, beauty, and meaning.

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years chronicles Miller's rare opportunity to edit his life into a great story and to reinvent himself so nobody shrugs their shoulders when the credits roll. When his producers begin fictionalizing Don's life for the film—changing a meandering memoir into a structured narrative—the real-life Don starts a journey to make his actual life into a better story.

In this book, we have a front-row seat to Miller's journey—from sleeping all day to riding his bike across America, from living in romantic daydreams to facing love head-on, from wasting his money to founding a life-changing nonprofit.

Guided by a host of outlandish but very real characters, Miller teaches us:

  • Why God hasn't fixed us yet
  • The power of speaking something into nothing
  • The redemptive beauty that can come from tragic circumstances
  • How to get a second chance at life the first time around

Through heart-wrenching honesty and hilarious self-inspection, Miller takes listeners through the life that emerges when it turns from boring reality into a meaningful narrative.

Love Donald Miller................very inspirational, has led to changes in my life. The way he shares his "story" and encourages us to consider our "story" was great. I need to find more from this guy.

So many great quotes & take aways. The reading was a bit slow and got on my nerves a at times, but I like that it is the author. It has had a tremendous influence over how I look at and live my life. I want to live a good story and that message and how to do that here are clear. The humor is enjoyable. He does a great job breaking down what it takes and providing examples in his and others' lives.

Inspired to write my own great story

I had never heard of Donald Miller prior to this book. I just happened to get it on an Audible sale, yet, I cannot say enough about it. I normally listen to a book once and I don't often recommend audiobooks to others. I already plan on listening to this again and I am hounding my husband to give it a listen.

I have tried to figure out what about this book really spoke to me. I think it is because the author, and narrator, is a normal guy. He is a normal guy that I am pretty sure I would like if I met him. He asks nothing extraordinary of me. He is not directly telling me how to be a better Christian, how to live a more fulfilling life, or telling me what my life is missing. He does use some scripture in the text, but it is not a primary focus. I am a Christian, but I do not enjoy reading or listening to anything "preachy." I think he is trying telling a great story with his life, with all of its ups and downs. And, it inspires me to want to write a good story for my own life.

A normal guy telling an extraordinary story

Once again, Donald Miller graces the world with words and perspectives that simply change the way a person sees life and their place in the world. I'm always a little sad when the end of the book arrives, wishing to hear more of the wonderful thoughts in Donald's mind. Worth the read/listen- 100%.

One time through won’t get it. This will be on repeat, I suspect. Already purchased it for a birthday gift. It is not for everyone. It is great, though. for thinkers who want to make their story better.

So much to learn here…
