Publisher's summary

From the bestselling author of The Bomber Mafia: discover Malcolm Gladwell's breakthrough debut and explore the science behind viral trends in business, marketing, and human behavior.

The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

“A wonderful page-turner about a fascinating idea that should affect the way every thinking person looks at the world.” —Michael Lewis

Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Like the best social dynamics professor you never had, Malcolm Gladwell deconstructs a wide range of phenomena (from the reduction of crime in New York to the rise of Sesame Street) to deliver a fascinating understanding of how "social epidemics" spread. And while author/narrators are often a mixed blessing, Gladwell is so friendly and well-paced that I was actually disappointed when The Tipping Point was over. - Ed Walloga

Critic reviews

"History takes on a whole new perspective as he describes events of early America that specifically follow his theories of 'selling the public on an idea' and 'social epidemics.' Feedback from market mavericks further substantiates Gladwell's viewpoints." (AudioFile)

"Gladwell, a New Yorker staff writer, offers an incisive and piquant theory of social dynamics that is bound to provoke a paradigm shift in our understanding of mass behavioral change." (Booklist)

"Hip and hopeful, The Tipping Point is like the idea it describes: concise, elegant, but packed with social power. A book for anyone who cares about how society works and how we can make it better." (George Stephanopoulos)

Sociology for the masses.

Another hit by Mr. Gladwell. He take something as dry as sociology and presents the theories in vignettes that are so interesting, yet are factual demonstrating the points he is walking the reader through. I wish more teachers were as stimulating as him. One other point, this book is read by the author which I really appriciate. This gives you more the intent and tone of the original author.

good overall listen

It was easy to finish. Narration was a little dry but overall not too bad. The author as the narrator provided some input I am sure another would not be able to do.

Wonderful book but .aa files are very limiting

Would you consider the audio edition of The Tipping Point to be better than the print version?

The book itself is fantastic and I highly recommend it. However, I wish it was available in something other than the .aa format. I have an mp3 player that I take with me on the train and to the gym. As it turns out, .aa files only work on my desktop computer, where I never listen to audio books. Therefore, the .aa file is basically useless. I then had to buy the book version of The Tipping Point and read it on the train. So if you like listening to audio files at home rather than while you're out doing other activities, you will enjoy this book. Otherwise, don't waste your money.

What other book might you compare The Tipping Point to and why?

I've also read Outliers and Blink by Malcomlm Gladwell. I'd recommend both of those as well.

Would you be willing to try another one of Malcolm Gladwell’s performances?

I'd definitely read his books or buy an audio book that was in a format that actually works.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

It's hard to narrow it down to only one. There is so much insight in this book that you'd really need to read it to appreciate how much it has to offer.

Great book, revealing concepts!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Tipping Point to be better than the print version?

Definitely better while driving! Audio books where the author reads them so far have been superior to the alternative. Only the author truly knows how to emphasize the book in a way that connects with the listener. I can say I wouldn't have taken the time to read this book in the near future, the audio book was a great option.

What other book might you compare The Tipping Point to and why?

All of the authors other works, it's a great addition to the collection

What does Malcolm Gladwell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

his personal emphasis, you can tell which bits of the research surprised him the most!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Maybe...but that would be a long drive to work. I prefer to space it out over a few commutes.

Any additional comments?

All capable authors should be the readers of the audio book version!

Thoughtful Structures and Strategies

Really enjoyed the ideas contained within the book. Narrator, Gladwell himself, had an easy to listen to voice. Biggest distraction was the seemingly random music that began to play. Couldn't tell if it was meant to denote the end of a chapter, or an important point, or still something else. Hoping there isn't music in the next Gladwell book I am listening to... Outliers.

Excellent!

Riveting concepts presented clearly and forcibly. The examples and case studies were sometimes quite graphic but the ideas at amazing.
