About this listen

Five years ago, Lieutenant Marsha Gagliano disappeared when her helicopter crashed in Afghanistan. Her wife held out hope for her return, but with no word from the army after all that time, she begins to realize she may have to move on without her.

At the embassy in Kabul, a burqa-clad woman arrives at the gate with two young children in tow. The black-haired, brown-eyed woman looks like an Afghan native, but her American accent belies this. She identifies herself as Lieutenant Marsha Gagliano, all the while keeping a close eye out behind her as though at any moment, someone might jump out and snatch her back.

Questions arise regarding her disappearance and reappearance and the army is suspicious. The children are obviously hers. Has she consorted with the enemy? How will her wife react to these children? Will she be able to accept children she had no part in conceiving?

What is this woman hiding beneath her chador? What secrets lie behind her veil of silence?

Coming home has its challenges

Personally I loved this book. The way the characters interacted thru a seriously rough time yet pulled it thru was amazing. Kind of wishing there was a next chapter to their story....

Outstanding!

K’Anne Meinel did an amazing job writing this novel! The storyline was enthralling and kept my attention throughout the entire audiobook! I tip my hat at her efforts to keep the Military Protocol intact. There is the pretend version of how things work in a military atmosphere and there is the reality. K’Anne Meinel kept it pretty close to reality. As someone that was born and raised in that environment, I really appreciate that! I’ve had the pleasure of listening to many of her audiobooks and this one has been my favorite!

The narrator, Lois Ridge did an amazing job on each Character. She brought the words to life! I will be looking for other audiobooks narrated by her!

Amazing story

Wow! I loved this story. I was so impressed with Marsha’s strength and determination! I know that the love she and Heather have for each other was key to her recovery! The author did an excellent job researching the military and I was immersed in the the story and all the questions she had to endure. The narrator was great! I really enjoyed this one!

Definitely a good one

I enjoyed the story and really do hope for more of it or some additions to this story. I hope the author continues audiobooks with this narrator and I have listened to a few of the others and the narrator just wasn't great. Worth a credit for this book. clearly the author researched military protocol as even parts of the UCMJ are spoken about. Prior military myself I was shocked. But the story was sad, happy, exciting and crazy all in one. Very enjoyable please write more with this couple. I want to know if they decide to have more kids on the wife's side, I want to know if the rest of the Arabic tribe come after them or leave them alone. So much I feel another book could be made.

Great idea, questionable execution

I was really excited to get a review copy of this audiobook. Having been in the Air Force the concept drew me in. Unfortunately, I dont think this book delivered. The narration was adequate. There are so many times when words are repeated in the same paragraph, assumedly to bring heightened specificity, but it ends up bringing you out of the story because the flow is off. Also, personally, I think the representation of Marsha was written oddly. Her attempts at cheer, friendliness and other overtly positive behaviors don't fit with PTSD especially when she first arrived at the consulate. That odd behavior continues throughout the book and it just feels inauthentic. I think a little more research in this area could have made this more realistic. I'm sorry that I don't have more positives to offer.
