About this listen

A fresh, engaging, and relentlessly paced story of a Vietnam veteran's personal experiences and exploits while serving two tours of duty, one as a Cobra gunship pilot, in war-torn Vietnam.

This is an entertaining audiobook that keeps you listening and leaves you eager for the next chapter. The author is a highly decorated veteran of two years in Vietnam who realized it was time to record his memories of those times.

Unlike many works created about the war, Payne’s audiobook is a lesson of inspiration spiced with humor. It details the challenges he had to overcome and the lessons he had to learn.

A different type of book about the Vietnam war

This book is not your typical Vietnam war autobiography. I had just finished the book We Were Soldiers Once and Young by Hal Moore. That book was your typical war story. There were a lot of heroic acts and people getting killed etc.

This book is very different. It looks at the war from a different perspective. The author does a very good job of capturing the conflicting orders, his thoughts and confusing orders about the way things were done. From sending troops from Washington State to the wrong locations in Vietnam to bringing the bodies of fallen combatants back in the same vehicles they carried refrigerated food for the troops

After listening to it I came away with a very profound feeling of how terribly screwed up things were. The authors experience conveys the dichotomy that existed even in the middle sixties when the author was in country. It was clear the war effort was very fractured in its goals and objectives

If you're interested in a book about the Vietnam War from a different perspective that does not involve a lot of violence but more the day to day events, trials and tribulations it's a very good book

I very much enjoyed this book as it gives balance. I was given this book by the author to review and the opinions are my own.

Interesting

Had some good stories. Reader should've practiced more.

Good memories

Vietnam Veteran Memoirs: The Adventures of a Florida Flatlander in Vietnam. A great set of memories, I liked the book - mainly because the author didn't dwell on the death and carnage of the war. Instead he fondly remembered people and events many of them humorous or ironic. All of them personal to him.

Narration horrible

I liked the story but the narrator needs a new job. He was horrible. Pauses in wrong spots stops and repeats same line. One time started same line three times with a sigh between the second and third time. Very unprofessional job.
