Publisher's summary

For fans of the New York Times best sellers The Last Punisher and Lone Survivor, a heart-pounding military memoir from a former Army Ranger sniper and Special Operations weapon sergeant turned journalist about the incredible highs and devastating lows of his career.

Growing up in small New York towns, Jack Murphy knew he wanted to lead a life far from the ordinary - a life of adventure and valor. After the 9/11 attacks, he immediately enlisted in the Army, knowing this was his chance to live the life he desired and fight for a cause he staunchly supported. After making it through the rigorous Ranger Indoctrination Program, he graduated sniper school and was promptly deployed to Afghanistan, where his experiences went from ordinary to extraordinary.

In this gripping military memoir, Murphy recounts the multiple missions he underwent as a Ranger, a Special Forces weapons sergeant, and ultimately, a boots-on-the-ground journalist. From enemy ambushes, dodging explosives, crashing terrorists’ weddings, and landing helicopters in the streets of Mosul, Jack provides a hard-hitting glimpse of what combat is like in some of the world’s most dangerous, war-torn places. With tours of duty in two of the most decorated units of the armed forces, Murphy brings a unique perspective to the military genre as he reflects on his great triumphs and shattering failures both on and off the battlefield.

Later, Murphy turned his attention to breaking news within the military. His stories have taken him from Iraq to Switzerland, from Syria to South Korea. From crossing Middle Eastern borders in the dead of night to rolling into an IED-laden zone, Murphy’s stories are always a thrill a minute.

Murphy’s Law tells a story of intense bravery and sacrifice - both on and off the battlefield.

Unexpected!

While I do sincerely like to get multiple perspectives on the topics of war, veterans service and opposing view points etc, this book seriously surprised me! I am also a Veteran of the Iraq war, Global War on Terrorism, Afghanistan, Enduring Freedom and had served 6 years in the US Army plus 17 years in the US Air Force and National Guard. As such, I dont share nearly any of the authors conclusions. I was not a Special Forces operator, but working in two branches over my 23 years of service I have seen some of the best and worst of what our county is capable of. Unfortunately, I found this account as described by the author to be somewhat whiny, even to the point of wanting to quit the book altogether, but I finished it and am glad I did. I think most veterans will be surprised (both positive and negative) by this book and honestly, I believe it's somewhat of a "love it" or "hate it" synapses of the authors experiences.

Thank you for your truths

Jack, thank you for being brave enough to tell the tough truths. The world needs more people like you! I’d love to come write for you one day, once I retire from the Navy.

pretty good

breaks down a lot of what goes down and how it's done and truths, and lies, and consequences of things. pretty vague description I wrote because it covers so much and the same principles I explained can be applied to a variety of things, and scenerios so just listen to the audible.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

I have been a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger since I first saw him on TV, competing in bodybuilding competitions. There was no one who could compete with him in those competitions. He was intimidating. I continued to follow him in his movies and was amazed when he became Governor of California. In this book, he really provides a total biography of his life from growing up in Austria, his move to America, becoming a movie star, and governor, and life afterward. He goes into great detail. It is an amazing story. He is my hero and would be a great President if only he could run. President Trump could a learn a lot from him, and so could all of us. I loved the last chapter where he leaves us with great advice for being successful in life. Not everyone can be as successful as him, but if we follow his advice, we would all be better off. A remarkable read, highly recommended.

Interesting

Interesting book, although the author spoke in circles at times & repeated himself. Some chapters left you hanging & were closed out abruptly.

I didn’t understand the point of him going to Syria; what was accomplished?

5 stars because anyone who was SF has my respect.

Fantastic!!!

This was a great insight into many aspects of the world that I would not know or understand from my normal Channels of information. I was so glad Jack Murphy read this book. I find it difficult to get into some books because the narrator’s voice does not match what’s in my head. I also enjoyed some of the additional editorials made in real time as Jack read the book.

I remember "Embrace the Suck"

"When officers write their story, it is called memoirs for NCO's it is called an expose." I served in the same Army as Jack for twenty years and fifteen minutes (canteen turn in at CIF slowed me down) albeit I served with the "normal" units such as 1st, 2nd and 25th Infantry Divisions. He can still articulate to anyone the trials and hardships that the American Warfighter experiences during their time. Jack will spark conceptual thought into what the service member faces before, during and after their time in service. He will inspire the reader to look at the "True North" when it comes to values and what traits we should look for in leaders. I thought I was going to binge watch the day away with some Netflix, but once I started I could not put down the book. Well done, Jack!
