Publisher's summary

Two species lived in peaceful coexistence on the planet Demoth until a deadly plague wiped out millions of the winged Ooloms while leaving humans untouched, helpless to do more than ease the suffering of their alien friends and neighbors. Faye Smallwood saw the horror firsthand, caring for the plague victims in her fahter's hospital. She was there when he discovered the cure that made him famous. She was also there when a freak accident killed him.

Desperate to escape her past, Faye joins the Vigil, a band of fiercely independent monitors charged with rooting out government corruption. To help in this struggle, her mind is linked to the powerful datasphere that regulates the planet...and suddenly, she receives a cryptic vision promising peace and healing. Instead, Faye becomes the target of unknown assassins in a sinister conspiracy that threatens to unleash a new and more deadly outbreak.

For humans and Ooloms were not the first species to inhabit Demoth. Somewhere in the ruins of long-abandoned settlements, something was left behind: an alien technology of unimaginable potential to build - or destroy. Enemy agents will stop at nothing to find it. Some of Faye's own people will kill to uncover its secret. With no one else to trust, she turns to the one person who can help unravel the mystery: Festina Ramos - explorer, outcast, ever-vigilant champion of those whom society deems expendable.

Great book, narration fair with some issues

Vigilant is one of my favorite books from this author (Hunted, is the other). The narrator was decent, I liked her voice but (and I don't know if she did this for her character) some of her inflections were annoying. Meaning her voice would go up at the end of a sentence A LOT - a bit like a question mark when it was actually a statement. Also there were points where she either did not read what was written or it was read weird (ie. dying ALIGHT instead of dying OF THE light, "there you ARE" instead of "there you GO"). Nitpicky of me? Maybe. But like I said, this is one of my more favorite books.

NOT QUITE A SEQUEL

It's been 2 years since the events of the previous book.

The book has a very slow beginning about 1/4 of it is just informational story line about new acting scene, it was so boring that I almost dropped it, but gradually it picked up the pace, and yet it was completely different from the first book.

The story is kinda science fiction conspiracy detective with completely new set of characters, and even those that are familiar to us have a completely different feel to them.

PS
I'm not sure if I will buy the next book.

My Favourite Book, Poor Choice of Narrator

This book is great to read. Audio not so much. The narrator sounds much too girly for the character, who is an over 40, PTSD suffering survivor. Not only does the pitch and tone of the narrator not jive with the dark humour of this book, but she also seems almost gleeful, instead of the tired, sarcastic, self-deprecated voice of the main character. The narrator also does not, in my opinion, work all that hard at voice differentiation for the other characters, either. I have longed for an audio of this book for years, only to be disappointed. I will still read my hard copy of the book, though.
