Publisher's summary

Inspector Erlendur returns in this award-winning international best-seller.

The Christmas rush is at its peak in a grand ReykjavIk hotel when Inspector Erlendur is called in to investigate a murder. The hotel Santa has been stabbed to death, and Erlendur and his fellow detectives find no shortage of suspects between the hotel staff and the international travelers staying for the holidays. As Christmas Day approaches, Erlendur must deal with his difficult daughter, pursue a possible romantic interest, and untangle a long-buried web of malice and greed to find the murderer. Voices is a brutal, soulful noir from the chilly shores of Iceland.

Another captivating story!

You cannot help but love the main characters, faults and all. This story takes place during the Christmas holidays which always makes me fall a little more in love with a story. His stories always leave you guessing right to the end..

Love the series

Such a laid back thoughtful story, perfect narration. Opens a window on Iceland, and the idiosyncratic (to me) police procedures, and general outlook on life.

Farther Christmas

Plumbing the depths of pathos and forming pearls from pain. The pacing is addictive, the suspense seductive and the lessons lasting. I always feel great narration and good stories should be a valid form of therapy. Exquisitely read and deeply affecting. I'll never look at child stardom or child abuse in the same way.

I'm Hooked!

This is my third Icelandic noir mystery by Arnaldur Indridason. Absolutely excellent writing and narration.

Almost a 4

A mystery set in the Scandinavian area, my favorite genre these last few years. This book is pretty good but I felt bogged down with the number of witnesses with annoying little answers. I was glad when it was finally over. I like the author but this book is weak.

Love this reader!

The Erlendur books are fun, partially due to George Guidell, the reader. Erland or is an inspector in the Icelandic police. Although in Iceland there are only about 1.8 murders per year on average, Erlander seems to continue getting murder mysteries to work on. In the US, we 10 to see crime as very commonplace so some of time when the police are working on a murder, the confusion the people display is comical. If you are looking for a thrilling murder mystery, this may not be the place to go. But if you are looking for a complex story about people's relationships to one another, with a murder embedded in it all, this is definitely something to try. I started listening to these because I wanted to learn more about Iceland and although this is not to learn about Iceland, I do get some ideas about how Icelanders look at things.

Voices

I have only just discovered this author. When I have finished one I am eager to read Arnaldur Indridason's next novel. I also need to give credit to my all time favorite narrator George Guidall.

WOW!

I rarely write reviews here despite being an avid audible member for a dozen years. To be honest, the first book of this series was just ok. Interesting and I love Guidall (who doesn’t) but the story didn’t catch me. #2 two was much more enjoyable and this one is as good a story as there is. I am blown away by how well written this book is. Just when you think it can’t get better, deeper, more complex, more interesting - it does. A plus here folks. And, despite the fact that the series starts a bit slowly, reading them in order will have its benefits.

Love this series

This story is entertaining and engaging from the start; one of the best for me so far. Inspector Erlendur and his detectives investigate a murder in a Reykjavik hotel. Insightful (and colorful) descriptions of characters, situations and conversations ensue. Indridason (and the translator) is at his best with this novel. George Guidall narrates perfectly.
