About this listen

From the best-selling author of A Higher Call and Spearhead comes an unflinching firsthand chronicle of the heroic US Marines who fought on Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and in other pivotal battles during the Pacific War, a classic book now expanded with new stories from the flyboys overhead and the home front at war.

Following 15 Marines from Pearl Harbor, through their battles with the Japanese, to their return home after V-J Day, Adam Makos and Marcus Brotherton have compiled an oral history of the Pacific War in the words of the men who fought on the front lines. With vivid, unforgettable detail, these Marines reveal harrowing accounts of combat with an implacable enemy, the camaraderie they found, the friends they lost, and the aftermath of the war's impact on their lives.

With unprecedented access to the veterans and unpublished memoirs, Voices of the Pacific presents true stories of heroism as told by such World War II veterans as Sid Phillips, R.V. Burgin, and Chuck Tatum - whose exploits were featured in the classic HBO miniseries The Pacific - and their Marine buddies from the legendary 1st Marine Division.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The stories were interesting and well written.

One of the best books I have ever read

This book is a great example of what patriotism is all about. Every generation should read books like this to truly understand that in America Freedom is not free but exists by the sacrifices of young men and women who served in the military especially during war time.

Patriotism at its best

At first I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy a book like this. But I became to understand the genius behind it. I got to listen to answers from people that were there. Great read.

Unique

I loved this book and the people that it is about, they really were the greatest generation, so many died and so many who gave there life and freedom isn’t free.

Amazing story’s

Dead bed confessions can be hard due to their brutal honesty and clarity, and disclose stories that went untold.
Fortunately an author convinced a Pacific Theater World War 2 Marine that the stories of their buddies who did not make it needed to be told.
Finally those stories are being composed to memorialize the sacrifices of a global war effort in the modern age, which lessons learned may be applied to find resolutions and alternatives to war.
Nonetheless, the veterans and service men who gave their all is remembered in this written work.
Though a bit flat in its reading, the power of story prevails in this audiobook, and I recommend it.

The Stories Finally Told

Moving stories of true heroes and patriots that gave so much. It makes me think about everyone who does nothing but complain about this country and expect to be given everything. We owe these men a profound debt of gratitude.
Thank You
Grateful American

What a debt we owe to these men.

Absolutely wonderfully written and researched. There are many voices in this book so it can be a bit hard to follow as to which person is speaking. However, the story is a must in understanding the sacrifices endured for our liberty.

Historical Must Read

Adam Makos has written another great historical book about the struggles of the U S Marines fighting under horrible conditions during the island hopping in the Pacific. He made it feel like you were sitting around a campfire listening to the veterans tell their personal stories.

An interesting presentation

These voices bring life as personal stories the true horror of the war rather than mere ticking off historical facts.

Not just ticking off historical data

a sobering book of heros. The stories told in this book need told and remembered. These men had to do unthinkable things in the face of one of our country's most brutal enemies. absolutely a must listen for anyone interested in the USMC or WW2.
