Publisher's summary

Is darkness synonymous with ignorance and evil? Or is it the original matrix from which all life emerges, and the Mother to whom it returns? Higher and higher levels of artificial illumination have suppressed our contact with the numinous since the Industrial Revolution, with dire consequences for society, our planetary ecology, and our souls. This mystical testament weaves together paleobiology, memoir, history, science, and spiritual archaeology to lead listeners back into the lost mysteries of the dark. Not since The Teachings of Don Juan or Ishmael has a book diagnosed with such urgency and cultural coherence the problems at the heart of modern life.

In Waking Up to the Dark, Clark Strand offers penetrating insight into the spiritual enrichment that can be found when we pull the plug on our billion-watt culture. He argues that the insomnia so many of us experience as "the Hour of the Wolf" is really "the Hour of God"—a wellspring of rest and renewal, and an ancient reservoir of ancestral wisdom and inspiration. And in a powerful yet surprising turn, he shares with us an urgent message for the world, received through a mysterious young woman he calls Our Lady of Climate Change (aka THE VIRGIN MARY), about the challenges we all know are coming.

Beautiful

Very loving and beautiful in it’s expression of the deep and dark of the Divine Mother. It’s a beautiful introduction to not only the Dark Mother but also how to reconnect with deeper layers of ourselves by embracing what we perceive as scary or uncomfortable when going into our own depths and embracing the dark.

Raw Feminine Truth

The whole Strand and Finn family has amazing literary work. This particular piece gave definition to my own spirituality, it was perfect in every way. It has historical, ecological, and spiritual notes that just provide you leaving the book so much more robust than how you began.

A necessary read!

What a wonderful book! I’m not sure I’ll look at the darkness of night quite the same again. I enjoyed the book so much I’ve also purchased the hard copy.

Wow!

Shocking! -- I'm pretty sure - - to conventional thought/belief - - but I HOPE people will read on anyway bcz what Strand experienced is so true and the re-deepened understanding so desperately needed. As he and others say . . we've become locked inside of a very narrow view of reality and our world. This narrowed focus occurred as a natural part of other parts of human consciousness developing -- like, the left brain faculties of mind and the ability to truly embody ourselves as 'individuals' and not just sheep-like awareness. But it IS TIME to now see through this rich and piquant aspect of awareness to consciously recognizing our seamless ONENESS with all of life and each other. The "narrowing" of our focus happened so slowly over such a length of time that we can't see it . . . [unless and when discomfort with the falseness of seeing it as the whole truth] . . . makes us LOOK DEEPER than conventional assumptions. And Strand isn't the only one saying it. Many other spiritual teachers are saying these things -- many of them keeping much of the traditional teachings while also OPENING to these deeper truths that ARE within the traditional but which have been swept aside in the centuries-long wave of left brain development -- which has yielded many good fruits! It's time to marry the streams. I highly recommend this book.
Part of what Strand says is very dire. I feel it's important to add that to be more in tune and in love with the Mother we can and need also to be LIGHT and PLAYFUL and NOT WORRY about it all - all the time. TRUST is part of the love ;)

A combination of profound, deep bizarre ideas

Helped me recognize things in words but very ineffable rather disturbing insights, I think over my head and I am a very seasoned spiritual traveler. Very esoteric yet beautiful regardless.

Highly dissapointed

This is a very short book with only four hours or so of playtime, and the majority of it was very repetitive and really did not go into the black Madonna at all. I was hoping for more historical context and found this book. Incredibly disappointing.
