About this listen

Walk in Hell is the incredible second book of best-selling author Harry Turtledove’s alternate history tetralogy of World War I, The Great War. The first book, American Front, was chosen by Publishers Weekly as one of the Best Books of 1998.

In this startlingly vivid portrait of a world torn apart by war and strife, the Confederate States of America ally with Britain and France, while the United States sides with Germany in a World War I that might have been.

Critic reviews

"Turtledove judiciously blends famous historical characters into the plot, so readers learn of General Custer's frustration at being unable to conquer Tennessee and see Woodrow Wilson as a Confederate president. Although there are numerous battle scenes, the gore is restrained. Instead, the author emphasizes character, and his thorough knowledge of the period's history will, as usual, captivate his readers." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Alternate history buffs...will marvel at his mastery of detail, enjoy following his logic as he pursues military and social developments onward in time, and find it hard to wait for the next in the series." (Amazon.com review)

A wonderful book in a great series. I love Harry Turtledoves passion for alternate history, and certainly has put up a thought provoking scenario.

The only thing that is tiresome about the series is the writing habits Harry continually displays. The author constantly “overstates the facts”. Little statements that reinforce what has been said, whether in the characters inner monologue or out loud, happen every other paragraph.

But I cannot call the series bad because of it and I still thoroughly enjoy the southern victory books.

A very nice same old same old

Allright

Still a few too many subplots - Custer I'm looking at you - but benefits greatly from tedious groundwork laid in first book. Plot develops nicely.

Big step up from The American Front

Turtledove (along with Guidall's narration) really bring the characters to life. I really hated to see it end!
