About this listen

From number one New York Times best-selling author Marie Lu - when a game called Warcross takes the world by storm, one girl hacks her way into its dangerous depths.

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn't just a game - it's a way of life. The obsession started 10 years ago, and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty-hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks in to the opening game of the international Warcross Championships - only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she's going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game's creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year's tournament in order to uncover a security problem...and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika's whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she's only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

In this sci-fi thriller, number one New York Times best-selling author Marie Lu conjures an immersive, exhilarating world where choosing who to trust may be the biggest gamble of all.

“A highly engaging and incredibly exciting science fiction novel for young adults.” (School Library Journal, starred review)

“[A]s visual, kinetic, and furiously paced as any video game.... It’s ‘Gleaming the Cube’ meets ‘Strange Days’ meets ‘Blade Runner,’ and it’s a lot of fun.” (The New York Times)

Def worth the credit LitRPG book

I have read most of the LitRPG series so I was excited when I saw this new one starting. It is from a tough and smart woman’s POV as she goes from poor and almost homeless to world famous war cross player overnight. But there is a lot more at stake then just the world championships as she fights off unknown enemies before they can complete their plans. At the end you will find the entire world hangs in the balance! Narration is great. Romance scenes are definitely a little much but otherwise excellent book, def pick it up if you like the LitRPG genre.

Awesome action packed virtual world!

This is the second series I have begun by Marie Lu. Well, I hope this will become a series, because I’m definitely gonna need more! Lu’s books always entertain me. I am so glad I grabbed this audiobook to listen to at work!! I would have finished much quicker if I hadn’t had to pause so often for incoming calls & such. I️ found myself grabbing my headphones to listen even while cooking dinner which is a rare treat with kiddos running around the house.
We are thrown into this amazing virtual reality filled world where people are intense about their gaming & almost pausing life for the upcoming Warcross tournaments. The characters are diverse, interesting, & witty. The action & emotion flowed well, but toward the end really picked up its pace. I can’t wait to read more!

Teen Romance

I didn’t realize this would be a teen romance action book. Maybe it’s because I am an adult well passed teen phase but I found the heroine to be a Mary Sue and literally every move to be predictable. I called the twist and the ending as soon as the love interest’s tragic backstory was revealed. All in love 3/10. It did get me through parts of a cross country drive so I’ll give it that.

Though honestly, the set up for the sequel seems like it would be much more interesting than this first book. The heroine would probably still be annoying but the plot progression seems like it would be more interesting.

I though this was optional

Good book definitely worth reading/listening to. It's a familiar store. I feel like alot of the influences for the store was from accel world / SAO but that's me.

If you like gaming related YA dystopia, this is up your alley.

I’ve been expecting to read this for a long while and finally got the time. It isn’t a hugely novel storyline, kind of Hunger Games ish with video games. And I think that sat wrong with me. I believe my dislike is pretty personal so if this seems like the kind of book you’d like, this performance is worth trying.
