Publisher's summary

For fans of Black Mirror and HBO's Westworld, Otherworld is the first book in New York Times best-selling authors Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller's new YA sci-fi-thriller series.

The future is now. And the future is terrifying.

There are no screens. There are no controls. You don't just see and hear it - you taste, smell, and touch it, too. In this new reality, there are no laws to break or rules to obey. You can live your best life. Indulge every desire.

It's a game so addictive you'll never want it to end. Until you realize that you're the one being played.

Welcome to Otherworld, where reality is dead. Step into the future. Leave your body behind.

The frightening future that Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller have imagined is not far away. Otherworld asks the question we'll all soon be asking: If technology can deliver everything we want, how much are we willing to pay?

Interesting concept, poor character development

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This wasn't a bad book. It had an interesting concept for the plot, but the protagonist became so stubborn and angry that it made me start hating his character. After that it became hard to cheer him on to victory.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

"Is that it?"

Loved It!

I’m not usually a fan of audible but I had some credits to use and thought I would give this story a chance and I’m so glad I did! Usually when I listen to stories, the narrators are soooo dry and read every character the same! It was awesome that Jason changed voices and really made you interested in the story! I’m more than eager to see what book 2 has in store!

Immersive, captivating, addictive read.

Likeable characters, engaging storytelling. A fresh take on a common dystopian cautionary tale. I'm excited to continue the series.

Really entertaining

The story is great, Jason’s performance was great. The only thing that is tough is that the main character, Simon is an annoying sh*thead a good chunk of the time.

Great performance by Jason Segel.

Liked the story, but felt a little forced at times. I would definitely read the sequel, because I have Hope's that it will turn into something bigger. Jason Segel did an amazing job reading it!

An Alright Book in my Opinion

While I can say it's an improvement from Ready Player One, it does has its flaws

The main character can at times can be too unlikable to envy with. The Antagonist is a bit over the top, but at least given reasoning as he/they chooses progress over human life

It's programmed creatures being alive just feel like another cliche, honestly. The heros need to save them and prove they are alive.

An extraordinary master piece of vr

If you like Ready Player One than you will love this telling of a VR world with life or death consequences.

B+

pretty good, felt a little rushed and underdeveloped, but it was cool to have Segel as the narrator. didn't satisfy the hunger for a better "Ready Player One" although it did have its own charm. seemed incapable of action and magic and puzzles and many things that are truly essential to a video gaming homage and instead honed in on a mystery adventure in an shallow vr land. that being said, I am just being critical, and should point out that I rather enjoyed it and would definitely love to read Miller and Segel's sequel, well listen to it at least

We’ll narrated book, just not for me

After having this book compared to Ready Player One, I purchased it with hopes of enjoying it in the same way. It turns out that the thing I liked about ready player one was the 80s and the character build up, but not necessarily the fight snd battle scenes. This book felt similar, but without the 80s. So I did like the setup of the characters and story, the “adventures” through different lands felt more like a kids “quest” movie (something like the never ending story), which isn’t something I enjoy as much. The story (in general) and narration is great, just not something that makes me want to listen to the next two books.
