Max knew the drugs and alcohol would eventually kill him, and sooner rather than later. So he enlisted in the Marines. His timing is unfortunate, as the events of 9/11 find him at the beginning of his military service, and he is sent to Iraq. The journey he embarks on is unlike anything he could ever imagine.
From Washington, Boston and New Orleans to the ancient sands of Iraq, Max and his entourage endure the toils of war with courage, romance, patriotism, heartache and passion. Only one weapon gets them through the anguish they come face to face with: Music.
This novel is a tribute to the author's son who served as a Marine, and to all Veterans.

Such an incredible book that will leave you amazed and dazed. Loved every moment of it.
The narrator was amazing! A good, brilliant job of bringing it alive.
A wonderful read!

Some points:
* A very good storyline that progressed nicely
* Characters descriptions was a little lacking in my opinion. I didn’t get the feeling of knowing the characters until a good way in to the story, but then it was great.
* The writing style is a little staccato and it felt stilted but the greatness of the storyline saved it for me.
* There’s a lot of love in this story and nothing can go to wrong with that.
About the performance:
* I felt like I was in a tin box listening to it and that was a little disturbing.
* Pronunciation was very good
* I would have preferred a male voice in the mix because I feel most women reading male voices can’t make it work, at least not for my ears.
* I loved the music in between the chapters 💜 it really set the mood when listening. Keep that up.
Would I buy this? Yes, because of the great story. And again, this is my personal opinion!!!

I'm not really sure how to write a review on this. This is not the type of book I normally read/listen to. Unfortunately or fortunately however you would like to look at it, I am the type that likes to be swept off into the mindless fantasy world (I tend to listen while I'm at work & anything that makes you think...makes it hard to work! lol). That being said, I really did enjoy the book. Its thought provoking. I thought it sounded a little bit like the narrator was talking in a tin can and I really wish that there had been a man speaking as the narrator didn't quite hit the mark.

This was a very nice narration. Each character’s voice was clean and clear even when accented and I was always able to discern who was speaking. Sometimes I had a bit of trouble with the fluctuations at the end of a sentence but that’s an issue that is all on the listener. Overall, I really enjoyed this narration.
This book covered the journey of a young man from his teenage years through his boot camp days in the Marines, and into the Iraq war where he meets and falls in love with Sam, a nurse at a combat surgical hospital. The author colored each phase with a picture so sharp and clear I felt as though I stood right beside Max, and Sam as well, as they both pushed through to become survivors. And along the way is the music that cannot be missed and only adds to the richness of this story.
I was given this free review copy audio-book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Disclaimer : I love NOLA, so that tie-in was a real bonus for me, I am a nurse who has worked in settings with Music Therapists, I have friends and coworkers who were there in Iraq, and I have worked with many USMC as well as the grandson.
I requested and received a free audio copy in a giveaway.
