About this listen

Waylon Jennings gave up his spot on a flight that changed music history. His mentor, Buddy Holly, took that seat and was killed when the plane crashed.

Born dirt poor, Jennings went from country disc jockey to country superstar, leading the revolution in country music with his platinum album The Outlaws. Through his eyes we see the Nashville scene in the early days, and through his honest, no-holds-barred storytelling, we follow his struggle to overcome drugs and impending bankruptcy to establish himself as one of the living legends of country music.

Remarkable Entertainer!!

I saw Waylon back in 1991 in Branson Missouri. At that time of my life I hated country music. I had just gotten out of the US Army & made it home in one piece, more or less. My parents were going to Branson for a three day weekend. Since I hadn’t seen them in almost 2 years to spend more time with them I accepted their invitation to go along. After making the drive & checking into a hotel myself and my father were looking in the paper to see who was playing when my Dad almost sounded like a kid finding his first present under a Christmas Tree when he announced “Waylon is playing tonight & tomorrow”. It was the “Box Car Willy Theater” and we were soon piling into the car and making the drive to it. We parked down the street from the place & as we were walking to the theater an old couple sitting on a bench near the sidewalk stopped me & asked if I was in the military and I replied I had just gotten out. They thanked me for my service and after some enjoyable small talk they explained that they were RV’ers & their friends got delayed on there way down to Branson and they had two tickets for Waylon’s show that night and would be honored if I took & used them. We thanked them and I told my parents well we won’t be sitting together I’ll just go and buy myself a ticket. I wound up buying a ticket for front row center!! I laughed to myself and said “Hell .... I can’t beg, borrow or steal a front row ticket to any bands that I like!! I was shocked at how good Waylon & his music was!! To this day it rates in my mind as the best concert I have ever seen! This was my start into country music or the “Outlaw Artists” like Merle, David Allen Coe. Still don’t like Willie though. Some artists have it and Waylon definitely did. Interesting story and I loved to hear his voice again. Any Waylon fan would enjoy this read/listen.
