About this listen

"Faeries liked to tease the weak, but they loved to annihilate the strong."

Seven years ago, the exposure of the paranormal led to the tumultuous downfall of human society. Now, the legions of the fae rule the broken world, and humanity has nothing left but a handful of protected cities and a heaping helping of regret.

Enter Vincent Whelan. Half fae and former cop, he's become the best known stretch scavenger in Kinsale, North Carolina, braving the "stretches" outside his city to recover precious items lost in the collapse. He makes good money. Lives the good life. Has a good future in store. As long as he can ignore his traumatic memories of the past.

But when a new job with an odd twist blows onto his doorstep, Vince finds himself unwittingly drawn into a vast conspiracy lurking underneath Kinsale's thin veneer of civilization. Old friends suddenly return to haunt him. New enemies appear at every turn. And Vince fears he isn't prepared to confront either one.

But if he doesn't put his detective hat back on and solve this case on a tight deadline, then what's left of the city he calls home might just crumble to dust.

What Fate Portends is the first novel of The Frost Arcana, an action-packed urban fantasy series set in a postapocalyptic world.

I liked this more than I did when I read the book

It took a couple chapters (like 2 or 3) to really get into it but once it got going, the story never let up. this was fun and intriguing. The characters were witty and well rounded. The reader's voice is soothing and the way the story was read made it so entertaining!

Action-packed urban fantasy

Vince Whelan is half Unseelie who must hide his fae appearance. The fae Queen Mab rules humans after a nuclear war between human and fae. Vince was beaten, chained and ostracized by his fellow police officers when they discover he is half fae. Now he works as a PI. He goes into the waste land and procure items to sell at his shop or for clients.

The story centers around a potentially dangerous item, a harp, falling into the wrong hands, which would bring the humans and fae to war again. Because Vince’s work takes him into the waste lands, he is hired to find the harp. He is put in a precarious position of having to work with his former partner.

There are many near misses, magical fighting, creatures, and fae who work to stop Vince from obtaining the harp. Vince has his own unique style of magic where he uses charms. He and his partner fight many fights where they get their ass kick but somehow prevail. He is determined that his world will not end in a human and fae war.
The story is captivating and leads the reader on an adventure. Can’t wait for the next in the series.

Not fine literature, but definitely enjoyable. It is exactly what you’d expect and satisfying for delivering.

Interesting

Good action packed and entertaining story involving a post-apocalyptic half fae half human ex detective who gets pulled in to a conspiracy to over throw the status quo. I liked the storyline and hope that more is to come. The narrator did a nice job. I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Very Good Book

I enjoyed this book a great deal, it is like a post-apocalyptic Dresden, except as a fey instead of wizard.

AWESOME. GOOD START TO A NEW SERIES.

Fantastic story and the plot line is excellent. Vince Whelan is a half Fae and half human. Trying to earn a living in a human world. After the Great War between faes and humans now controlled by the faes. Very action packed and the pace is very good. First book I have read by Clara Coulson. Very talented writer and well performed by Pavi Proczko. Worth a credit. I am looking forward to book 2.

Great Story

The story was great, and I was sucked in all the way thru the book. There was a little bit of language at the beginning that I think detracted from the book, and that really didnt fit in the story.

The narrator takes a little bit of getting use to, I literally thought for the first 20 seconds that a computer was reading the book. But once I got used to the narrators way of speaking I really enjoyed listening to the entire book.
