Publisher's summary
Nine-year-old Carrie Parker and her mother, Libby, are making a fresh start in the small town of Hartsville, North Carolina, ready to put their turbulent past behind them. Violence has shattered their family and left Libby nearly unable to cope. And while Carrie once took comfort in her beloved sister, Emma, her mother has now forbidden even the mention of her name.
When Carrie meets Ruth, Honor, and Cricket Chaplin, these three generations of warmhearted women seem to have the loving home Carrie has always dreamed of. But as Carrie and Cricket become fast friends, neither can escape the pull of their families' secrets - and uncovering the truth will transform the Chaplins and the Parkers forever.

Story
My darling little boy Albie adores playing at our new neighbours’ house. And after the terrible year we’ve had, I feel so lucky that we can start over in this perfect place, with new friends who treat Albie like the son they never had. He can’t stop talking about the tree house they’re building him, and the cookies they bake together. But as time passes, something starts to feel wrong. Why don’t they ever open the front door more than a crack? They told me they had no children so who does the small pink tricycle I saw in their hall belong to?

True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.

Beard's stunning debut is an epistolary novel written from 15-year-old Tess DeNunzio to her little sister Zoe. After Zoe's accidental death on September 11, 2001, a day so many others died, Tess' family is numbed by their personal tragedy. Already acutely aware of her odd place in a home where her mother and stepfather now have children of their own, Tess begins her letter as a means of figuring out her own life, from her two-hour-a-day hair and makeup ritual to her complicity in Zoe's death.

Hockey coach Ashley Jaswal doesn't take nonsense from anyone … except her overbearing and superstitious family. They believe she's a good luck charm for her brother Jas, the newest Vancouver Canucks draft pick, forcing Ash to attend all his games as he rises up the NHL ranks, sacrificing her personal life (not that she has one—who decided hockey season needed to be 10 months long anyway?). Ash also clashes with Jas’s teammate, Canucks captain Devin Snyder.

Know it could be true, Hope it was not
Such a talented and imaginative author and one that I have long enjoyed. The story was shocking and crazy and too real at times, but also had a few too many coincidences for my taste. I won't ruin it by pointing them out.
As for the narrator, the "voices" were hard to differentiate at times. But her own voice was soothing and easy on the ear, which adds to the enjoyment of the story for me.
For 5 stars, I would prefer that the author edit out the banal chapters of dialog...For instance, one conversation between Honor and her mother almost led me to shut it down. And the characters were not true to their established personality, such as Ed's chosen moment of emotional display.
Still, an enjoyable story and one that has you knowing it could have easily been a true story and also hoping that it was not.

Breathtaking
First, you must read ME AND EMMA. While WHAT HAPPENED TO MY SISTER can stand alone, you'll have a much richer understanding of nine-year-old protagonist Carrie Parker, her relationship with her parents, her pretend or maybe-not-pretend sister Emma, and the family dynamics.
I cannot say enough positive words about this book. I enjoyed WHTMS even more than M&E, which is so rare for a sequel. Elizabeth Flock has created a masterful voice for Carrie that's both heartbreaking and inspiring. The other narrator is Honor Chaplin, who's daughter Cricket befriends Carrie. Honor and her family just might need Carrie as much as she needs them.
If you read ME AND EMMA, you must read WHAT HAPPENED TO MY SISTER. If you haven't, download or run to the bookstore. You won't be disappointed.
