About this listen

An unthinkable tragedy forever changes a group of teens and turns family against family in this edge-of-your-seat thriller that begs to be heard in one sitting.

Best friends Lindsey, Kendra, and Dani endure every parent’s nightmare when a tragic accident befalls their teenage boys, leaving one dead, another in a coma, and a third too traumatized to speak.

Reeling from the worst night of their lives, the three mothers plunge into a desperate investigation of the bizarre incident. How could something so horrible happen in their wealthy Southern California suburb?

They soon discover that the accident was just the beginning, and troubling discoveries lead to chilling questions: Do they really know their children? Do they even know each other? As more secrets surface, a fog of doubt and suspicion threatens to poison their families, their friendships, and the whole community.

With the illusion of happiness and safety long gone, these women must now confront the hazards of heartbreak, the consequences of jealousy, and the dangers of living double lives.

It was OK

This book was okay. Not the best and not the worst. I don’t think we should be required to write 15 words to rate the book.

Unputdownable

Three lifelong best friends grow up, move to the same neighborhood and have teenage sons who become the best of friends. Then one night two shots change everything. One boy dies. Another lays brain dead in a coma. The other, unharmed but cannot speak.

THE BEST OF FRIENDS grabbed me in the prologue and still hasn’t let go. Lucinda Berry is a favorite of mine. Her storytelling is filled with heart, compelling characters and intriguing plots.

Told from the points of view of the women, Kendra, Dani and Lindsey, each harbors secrets. Each lies. Each loves fiercely. Each marriage is troubled. Each mother doesn’t see her son as clearly as she thinks.

THE BEST OF FRIENDS is part mystery, part women’s fiction and all worthwhile reading.

ETA: The audiobook is excellent too.

friends whose kids are in a real predicament

story was interesting with twists and turns. the action occurred early in the bin. the rest of the book is how friends and spouses interact and deal with the situations. heartbreaking. realistic.

A well-written and well-narrated book that was painfully tedious.

The story was so tedious!! It drags on and on with a thin plot. Described as a “domestic” thriller. Ha! It was well-written and well-narrated, which helped me complete it, but I would not recommend.

Too many characters

It literally took me until I was nearly finished with the book to be able to keep the characters straight.

Binge-listen worthy!

I've listened to several of this authors audiobooks and this twisted tale threw a curve ball at me, especially at the very end!
I disagree with the reviewer who says unsympathetic women as well as the kids. The women in this story had been friends for years and watched each other's children grow up. They struggle to remain close and supportive of each other through this tragedy that has changed their lives forever as each find a way to grieve, cope, continue life, and forgive!
Love Lucinda's style as always!
