Publisher's summary

Bracing honesty, rare insight, and more revelations: the New York Times bestselling author of Lady in Waiting shares everything she's learned from her extraordinary and unexpected life.

Lady in Waiting brought us royal magic, beguiling insight, and jaw-dropping stories from life inside Anne Glenconner’s privileged circle, which though golden didn't always glitter. As she revealed in her memoir, it has been one of stark contrasts—from growing up in the splendor of Holkham Hall to living in a tent in the jungle of Mustique, from traveling the world with Princess Margaret to coping with her wildly unpredictable husband Lord Glenconner. She has also survived the tragic loss of two of her sons and nursed a third son back from a coma.

Now in her ninth decade and at her happiest, she's keen to share everything her unexpected life has taught her—the wise, the hilarious, the poignant, and the illuminating. As a wife, she became a master in the art of keeping the peace, knowing when to pick her battles, when she needed help—and when to take a lover. As a hostess, she acquired great practical skills in throwing marvelous parties and looking after magnificent homes, and, as a lady in waiting, became well versed in diplomacy and etiquette. It was as a mother she learnt the toughest lessons of all, and through them the value of friendship, family, and laughter to get her through the worst moments in life, as well as celebrate the best of them.

Whatever Next? is a treasury of hard-won wisdom, and richly entertaining proof that staying open to every new adventure sets an inspiring example for us all.

So touching and lovely

Not one to follow the antics of the royals and aristocracy, this was a surprisingly candid, thoughtful and fun memoir. Cheers to Anne and another 10 years of family and adventure. I hope she continues to write. She’s wonderful!

Love it.

Can’t beat wisdom from a 90 year old. Fascinating life. Wish my mother had the same opportunity to joy down her life.

You Go Girl

What the world needs now is to hear from people that have REAL experience like Anne. It seems like every Tom, Dick & Harry is writing their memoirs at age 20, 30, 40… to make a buck, increase their followers, do reputation management. While the motive behind Lady and this current book may indeed be financial, at least the author has lived a life and has something to SAY. Life is a great equalizer - having a pedigree, servants etc does not stave off the vicissitudes that require great personal strength as Anne Glenconner proves in her narratives. I am glad she shares her life observances, from a perspective and a level of society ‘regular people’ rarely get to see. Funny, dignified, interesting and thoughtful, Glenconner’s books leave other authors’ whinny, self pitying, follow-me-on-FB books in the dust.

Such an enjoyable and informative view of the inner world of aristocracy

Anne is a wonderful writer and narrator and she shares the trials and tribulations of a seemingly very privileged life. And what fun to read about royalty and near royalty!

Charming, informative, touching…A+

I read her previous book “Lady in Waiting” and so loved that book too. Thus, I could not wait to get my hands on this one. Anne has had such an interesting, fun, but testing life…she has come through with such HOPE, HUMOR and GRACE. I would LOVE to have her as a friend, as I have studied Princess Margaret and all of the older Royals since the early 1980s. I sincerely think there are a few more books in Ms. Glenconner, and I would buy and deliciously devour each one with anticipation. Her descriptions that she uses are so vivid, the words so perfect on the page. Sometimes, I snort with laughter…sometimes tears…but it the ride is so RICH in its entirety. I give both books an A+ and I hope she continues to write and tell us the stories of her interesting life.

Delightful and interesting

Lady Glenconner’s life hails from different era which has had a great impact on today’s world. She really helps us understand the context of her generation with intelligence compassion and wit. I love the fact that she reads her own books. It is almost as being in your presence.
