About this listen

On the cusp of her first London season, Miss Madeline Gracechurch was shy, pretty, and talented with a drawing pencil but hopelessly awkward with gentlemen. She was certain to be a dismal failure on the London marriage mart. So Maddie did what generations of shy, awkward young ladies have done: She invented a sweetheart.

A Scottish sweetheart. One who was handsome and honorable and devoted to her but conveniently never around. Maddie poured her heart into writing the imaginary Captain MacKenzie letter after letter...and by pretending to be devastated when he was (not really) killed in battle, she managed to avoid the pressures of London society entirely.

Until years later, when this kilted Highland lover of her imaginings shows up in the flesh. The real Captain Logan MacKenzie arrives on her doorstep - handsome as anything, but not entirely honorable. He's wounded, jaded, in possession of her letters...and ready to make good on every promise Maddie never expected to keep.

The narrator was EXCELLENT...she made the book for me. I was laughing out loud at many points. Steamy enough that I wouldn't listen without ear buds!

Funny, Hot, Steamy

I've read (listened to) A LOT of books in this genre, and this one continues to be an all-time favorite. Carmen Rose's narration is fantastic, seamlessly shifting between a British and Scottish accent, and she adds so much to an already well written story. There are some laugh-out-loud funny moments, plenty of varied spice, truly endearing moments, and a very engaging storyline with a beautiful and satisfying conclusion. I've already listened to this book a number of times, and I don't get tired of it. It's my go-to when I want to listen to a book I know I'll enjoy. Can't recommend it highly enough!

One of my favorite books of all time!

This story is fun and heartwarming. The characters aren’t connected to any other books, so it works well as a standalone story. There are a lot of great side characters that provide endless amusement and a break from the romance. Injured soldiers and a cooky aunt and lobsters blubbing make for a lot of fun.

Lovely plot, perfectly executed.

One of my favorite historical Romances ever! I have read a lot of books in this genre, this book ranks in my top 3! Loved it so much! The narrator was wonderful as well! What a great performance. I could not stop listening. Warning: it will leave you wanting more.

I kept waiting for this to rotate into the free or discounted collections, but finally just spent a credit on it. Glad I did! I'm a big fan of Tessa Dare and, really, most sexy highlander romances. They all kind of follow a formula, so you know what you're getting: enjoyable but nothing to blow you away. Well... I was a little blown away. This was so funny!!! I caught myself laughing out loud over and over. Unlike most of the others, I will definitely read this book again. (Months later, I can confirm that I've listened to this several times!)

Very funny characters, sweet romance, super steamy love scenes. (If I could award bonus points for the author's accurate portrayal of female pleasure, I would! Few things annoy me as much as miraculously swift and simultaneous orgasms. That was NOT a problem in this book and the love scenes are sexier for it.)

But strangely enough, the prologue might be the best part. Before the characters even meet, the letters set the light tone. They cracked me up - especially Captain McPillow. :-)

Can't recommend this one enough!

Probably my favorite romance novel, ever.

This was a fun read. Carmen Rose narrated it perfectly, and I love her Scottish accent.

Some of Maddie’s letters to her fictional captain are included at the beginning of the book and they’re hilarious.

The characters are rich, I loved them all. It’s a great storyline: funny, poignant, tender and sensitive. Very well-written, it’s an enjoyable book to read. I recommend it as well as the first two books in the series.
