About this listen

Rebellious rake. Brooding duke. Escaping an arranged engagement, he buys a wife he never intended to love… but loses his heart.

When Lady Emma Bardsley’s vile husband sells her at auction, she is purchased by the rakish duke of Loxchester. For Sebastian, buying a pig farmer’s wife is the perfect way to avoid an arranged engagement, no matter the scandal. But Emma has a secret—she’s a lady in disguise.

Emma hides her identity, hoping to run away. But she can’t hide her growing feelings for the amber-eyed rake who is showing her how much pleasure he can provide. Can she truly escape her terrible marriage for a passionate future with the duke who loves her?

Read by the award-winning narrator, Audie finalist, and Earphones for excellence in narration winner, Shane East, and Justine Eyre, a classically trained actor and narrator has been honored to receive a coveted Audie Award and multiple AudioFile Earphones Awards.

I tried to get through this book

The story line is really good. Wife does not grant husband of this era his "right" to bed her. Husband auctions wife off after making her don stinky peasant clothes. A man richer and of higher social standing bids for and wins the woman, takes her home and passes her off as his wife after cleaning her up.

Real husband tries to abduct her back, new guy barely rescues her.

That is as far as I got because I could not tolerate the female narrator's voice. I'm truly sorry because I hate criticism. Shane East delivers his trademark performance and does a great job with timing, pacing and expression. The female narrator, Ms. Eyre's voice does not match the younger character in the book. Her voice sounds like it should be an older character she is narrating and she doesn't deliver the MFL's spirit, defiance or energy. I just cannot get through listening. Shane East does not even carry it enough for me to finish listening and I was looking forward to this series.

Meh. . .

I don’t have any strong feelings one way or the other about this book. I didn’t HATE it (I didn’t really care for the sex scenes) but I didn’t really LOVE it either. I don’t think I’ll move forward with this series or this author.
