About this listen

Ezra Cloud hates living in Northeast Minneapolis. His father is a professor of their language, Ojibwe, at a local college, so they have to be there. But Ezra hates the dirty, polluted snow around them. He hates being away from the rez at Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation. And he hates the local bully in his neighborhood, Matt Schroeder, who terrorizes Ezra and his friend Nora George.

Ezra gets into a terrible fight with Matt at school defending Nora, and that same night, Matt’s house burns down. Instantly, Ezra becomes a prime suspect.

Knowing he won’t get a fair deal, and knowing his innocence, Ezra’s family sends him away to run traplines with his grandfather in a remote part of Canada, while the investigation is ongoing. But Matt is looking for him …

From acclaimed author Anton Treuer comes a novel that’s both taut thriller and a raw, tender coming-of-age story, about one Ojibwe boy learning to love himself through the love of his family around him.

It is hard to believe that Anton Treuer has never written fiction before because this is a moving story filled with humor, adventure, sadness, hope, and most importantly, love. The characters are well crafted and you come to care deeply for them as the story progresses. The characters of Emma and Liam share a beautiful love story and Liam is as funny a character as I have seen in fiction in a long, long time. This might be a young readers book but it moved this 54 year old man to tears and made me laugh out loud as well. This is a very authentic story as well because there may be no one who knows more about Ojibwe culture than Treuer. I can't recommend this book highly enough, and hearing the author speaking Ojibwe through his characters adds to the work. This would be a fantastic addition to any library or classroom and I, for one, hope the author is just getting started.

A very moving adventure story.

I’m in awe of the skills described in the story hunting, hide tanning, trap lines, and intuitive nature and respect with which they were done.

Every young person should read this book. The perspectives on indigenous culture offer understanding.

One of the very best audio books I ever listened to. I don’t fit into the young adult category but loved everything about this book. The grandpa character was especially real.

One of the best

I enjoyed listening to the calm voice of the author. I felt empathy from the story of how Ezra’s grandfather lost his children. I was in awe of the feeling of community and family as they celebrated Ezra in his first kill. This was a beautifully written and deeply moving novel of a glimpse into the life and culture of the Ojibwe people.

Coming of Age

Really enjoyed this book!! It’s got a lot of detail, culture and information but it’s so beautifully wrapped up in the narrative and story that it absolutely flows along and brings the reader on the journey. It’s rare to find a contemporary novel that really displays the art of telling story, especially using oral storytelling skills. I’m so glad I listened to this book on Audible. The writer/narrator is absolutely captivating.

Great storytelling!
