About this listen

Perfect for fans of Hatchet and the I Survived series, this harrowing middle-grade debut novel-in-verse from a Pushcart Prize-nominated poet tells the story of a young girl who wakes up one day to find herself utterly alone in her small Colorado town.

When 12-year-old Maddie hatches a scheme for a secret sleepover with her two best friends, she ends up waking up to a nightmare. She’s alone - left behind in a town that has been mysteriously evacuated and abandoned.

With no one to rely on, no power, and no working phone lines or internet access, Maddie slowly learns to survive on her own. Her only companions are a Rottweiler named George and all the books she can read. After a rough start, Maddie learns to trust her own ingenuity and invents clever ways to survive in a place that has been deserted and forgotten.

As months pass, she escapes natural disasters, looters, and wild animals. But Maddie’s most formidable enemy is the crushing loneliness she faces every day. Can Maddie’s stubborn will to survive carry her through the most frightening experience of her life?

Helped Me Cope With Covid

I listened to this book over Quarantine and it really helped me relate to this character, she is so brave! I think she is forced to grow and become more mature because of her extreme circumstances. This book provided hope to me in a dark time. I know some people were annoyed with the style of writing that the author uses, but I thought it fit perfectly in the story. Great narration!

Good book!

I enjoyed the book. I loved the way in which the book was written, with the randomness of thought as the main character experienced various emotions and struggles. Definitely accurate for the scenario of a 12-15 year old child being left alone with what was an unknown threat lurking, separating her from her family for an unknown amount of time.

I thought the narrator, although very extreme at times, did a good job at bringing the emotion of the text to life.

Aline is a great survivor story

I really enjoyed this book and the way it was written.
You really can imagine the story well. I loved the dog as I can relate to their comfort when alone.
The aspect of hope and being rescued is explored and I found that interesting.

Why I did not give it 5 stars is I was not convinced as to why she was absolutely alone for so long. I don’t want to spoil it for you. The reason and ending can lead to GREAT book discussions so it is worth it to read it!

At the end after the story, the author talks about why she wrote it in prose and I found this really interesting as well. enjoy alone…
