About this listen

Kate Marchant, author of Float, presents a story about a young journalist who fights for the truth to come to light—even if it means she might lose everything....

Laurel Cates has never wanted the spotlight. As a junior studying journalism at Garland University, she's perfectly content pumping out well-written fluff pieces for the school paper and focusing on the finer things in life: friends, house parties, and carne asada tacos. But when Laurel’s research for an article on the school’s beloved football coach uncovers a pattern of misbehavior and a trail of lies, she knows she has to expose the truth.

Even if it means facing public scrutiny. Even if it means risking her part-time job, her reputation, and her safety. Even if Bodie St. James, the heart-of-gold quarterback, seems hell-bent on convincing her that the man who has been like a father to him couldn’t possibly be the villain she thinks he is.

When Laurel and Bodie team up to prove each other wrong, their tentative alliance becomes complicated by growing feelings and mounting evidence. And Laurel must choose between staying invisible or doing what’s right...even if it costs her more than she ever imagined.

Glad I found this gem

It kept me engaged consistently, which is really all I ask for. The book moved at a good pace too. I will say, if I didn’t know Spanish, I probably would’ve missed a few things. Or I could’ve just used google translate. It’s not a huge deal if you miss it, but I do think those Spanish moments added something to the book, so I’m glad I understood.

A new favorite

What a great find! This was so intentional and steady and powerful. The narrator is superb and only enhanced the writing. I am now in search for both narrator and writer works.

Engaging story on a subject that is often covered up

Well, written and engaging. Subject matter is definitely something that happens. And sadly is often covered up. But the retaliation, disbelief, harassment, were all very realistic. There were times that Laurel’s inner monologue came off as whiney when she was in fact a stronger character, and I think the author should have incorporated the characters of Ellison and Marie more, since they were also a big part of breaking the story. Overall, I recommend.

Real and genuine story

Even if it is fictional, this was a great book that summarizes what happens in real like when institutions and businesses try to protect people of power and their bad behavior. Feminist but not anti-male. Very well written and fun! Love this author.

Just couldn't get into it

This novel is sooooooo slow moving and I did not find the characters likeable, engaging or interesting. Just couldn't get into it........

Very suprising to feel this way as I absolutely loved Float.

Sorry

Great story if only they left the shoving of LBGTQ out…

I really was so happy to have a story highlight the issues of coming forward when assaulted. I didn’t like that the book detailed the lbgtq culture so much, the story would have appealed to more audiences if it didn’t push this so much.
