Publisher's summary
Megin is 12; her brother Greg is 14. Megin is a slob; Greg is fastidious. They call each other Megamouth and Grosso. Between the two, the household is filled with their teasing and fighting. They are experts at the usual games of sibling rivalry and experts at inventing new ones. From carefully-planted cockroaches to creme doughnut fights, Megin and Greg's antics keep them in constant trouble. But even as they think up new ways to bug each other, they are also growing up. Soon, their rivalry will put them both to tests that have higher stakes than either Megin or Greg can imagine.
Jerry Spinelli, a Newbery Medalist, has raised six children, so he has plenty of firsthand information about kids like Megin and Greg. This energetic audiobook is a riotous trip through the early teenage years, especially with its dual narration by two of the most spirited readers of children's literature. If you enjoy this book, listen to Jerry Spinelli's Crash, an ALSC Notable Recording.

Story
He wasn't born with the name Maniac Magee. He came into this world named Jeffrey Lionel Magee, but when his parents died and his life changed, so did his name. And Maniac Magee became a legend. Even today kids talk about how fast he could run; about how he hit an inside-the-park "frog" homer; about how no knot, no matter how snarled, would stay that way once he began to untie it. But the thing Maniac Magee is best known for is what he did for the kids from the East Side and those from the West Side.

Story
Katherine Paterson, author of Newbery Medal winners Bridge to Terabithia and Jacob Have I Loved, again displays her storytelling talent in this powerful novel. Eleven-year-old Angel must play the adult when she and her brother are abandoned at their great-grandmother’s house and the old lady proves incapable of caring for them. An emotional tale, this drama teaches the age-old lesson that every person can stand tall when the world lets them down.

Story
It sucks being with Grandpa in this new town. It sucks that they left the old place without finding Rosco. Travis doesn’t want to do anything, especially try to get by in his classes, which never seems possible, anyway. He’s a Bluefish - stupid, angry, alone. Then, suddenly, there’s a girl. Velveeta. She’s up in his face and she’s not backing down. She is as loud as he is quiet, as outgoing as he is shut in. She’s pretty, in a funky, scarf-wearing sort of way, and she’s smart - way smart - smart enough to figure out that Travis has a secret.

In Emmy Laybourne’s action-packed debut novel, six high school kids (some popular, some not), two eighth graders (one a tech genius), and six little kids trapped together in a chain superstore build a refuge for themselves inside. While outside, a series of escalating disasters, beginning with a monster hailstorm and ending with a chemical weapons spill, seems to be tearing the world - as they know it - apart.

Childhood favorite
I don't usually read children's literature (or even YA) as an adult, but I was thinking about this book recently, a favorite of mine as a kid, and decided to see if it held up.
It did.
A tale of sibling rivalry, the antics between Megan and Greg are funny, believable, and charmingly told from each point of view.
Well-developed supporting characters add so much color to this witty, heartwarming story. I caught myself smiling, and even laughing out loud, so many times as I listened.
This is a story as gripping as it is goofy. You'd never expect such an emotionally progressing plot from a book with a title like this.
I read this book over and over as a kid, and I have to say, the narration pretty much did it justice. Especially Megan's voice. The voice of Greg was well narrated, but I thought the actor had more of an older quality to his voice, in spite od capturing the spirit of the character.
All in all, I'm so glad I listened to this one after so many years since reading it. This will continue to go down in history as one of my favorite books.

Nice to see a book I only remembered bits of.
Hilarous with a prank war to start, leading to heartwarming at the end. Rented this from my library a few times when I was younger, classic book. Shame George Guidall, who does the opening bit, doesn't narrate Greg's parts, but both narrators did a great job here. May listen to more of the author's books in the future.
