Our human psyches possess astonishing resources that wait within us, but we might not even know they exist until we discover how to access them and cultivate their powers, their untapped potentials and depths. Wild Mind identifies these resources - which Bill Plotkin calls the four facets of the self, or the four dimensions of our innate human wholeness - and also the four sets of fragmented or wounded subpersonalities that form during childhood. Rather than proposing ways to eliminate our subpersonalities (which is not possible) or to beat them into submission, Plotkin describes how to cultivate the four facets of the self and discover the gifts of our subpersonalities. The key to reclaiming our original wholeness is not merely to suppress psychological symptoms, recover from addictions and trauma, or manage stress, but rather to fully embody our multifaceted wild minds, commit ourselves to the largest, soul-infused story we're capable of living, and serve the greater Earth community.

I would like to use this information to help myself and others. I believe it will be very good place to start.

this book is fascinating and well written. the narrator is monotonous and mechanical, it was so bad I couldn't get through 30 minutes. I bought the print book

great book that I couldn't listen to

Plotkin has synthesised a body of work in this book that is truly extraordinary. He also should be commended for the candid way he shares insights on the root causes of the societal problems we face as a species. He speaks his wild mind, and pulls no punches. This work contains profound insight on the nature of what prevents humans living into their optimal potential, as well as practical processes to bring ourselves and in turn, our species back into a state of alignment.

The narration however is distracting. I get the sense that the narrator has not read the content even once before recording the voice track and is struggling to grasp the complexity of it, while trying to sound like he fully comprehends it at the same time.

If you don’t want to end up paying for this book twice, skip the audio version and buy a hard copy. Personally, the narrator made this a much more challenging listen than it needed to be, and in the end I’d rather just read it myself.

Audible would do well to make sure that voice artists are paid for an extra days work in order to have time to read it before being expected to perform it.

A magnum opus read by someone who doesn’t understand it.

I love how Plotkin plotted the map of developing your Self, that is, the center aspect of your 3D Ego (Spirit being above/around, Soul being under/inside). I’m taking this book with me as a guide to better understand and develop my Self.

The various aspects of personality have been wrapped up and depicted in the four cardinal directions, each encompassing one healthy, mature aspect of the Self and one unhealthy, immature subpersonality.

Plotkin offers clear descriptions, methods of cultivation and assimilation, and examples of each facet of the Self. I came away from this guide with a much clearer idea of where my sub personalities tend to “run the show” of my waking life behaviors as they try to protect me from further wounding and embarrassment that I experienced and child. The more I cultivate my mature four-fold Self, the better I can understand and assimilate the wounds of my past and start living my life from a place of love, care, reverence, authenticity, wisdom, and freedom.

We all had trauma - namely, a core wound and as Plotkin lays out, there would be no means to remember our mythopoetic purpose of our Soul’s journey to Earth if it weren’t for this challenge. Part of realizing and establishing your four-fold Self is to better equip you for the greater challenge yet of Soul Initiation and ultimate fulfillment of said purpose (you should read Nature and the Human Soul (NatHS) to catch up on the stages leading to Soul Initiation and what comes after).

Wild Mind lays out one of the missing pieces of Plotkin’s understanding of human development. NatHS rarely touched on personality, in favor of discussing the major life tasks associated with each stage of development and the challenges at each stage that prevent people from progressing (i.e., welcoming home your Loyal Soldier, the sub personality of the North, discussed in this book, but also a major developmental milestone of the Oasis, early adolescence, in human development, as discussed in NatHS)

If you have any interest in cultivating a more wholistic version of your Self, preparing yourself for Soul Encounter and Soul Initiation, or working to take back “control” of your life from the emotional impulses that seem to continually drive negative behaviors, this book is for you.
