About this listen

Duty versus desire

The peace between the Saxons and Danes has collapsed. Viking forces led by the war-lord Haesten strike at will across borders. One more push will destroy Wessex. The Danish warriors settled under the Dane-law are tempted to join with these new invaders, wiping clear the game board as they seek full dominance of Angle-land.

Sidroc, having witnessed his son Hrald's victory at Four Stones, undertakes the perilous return to Gotland, a journey shadowed by the spirit of his long-dead uncle Yrling. Before his father's eyes, Hrald has won the garrison fortress of Turcesig, but can he keep it?

Ceric, the son of Ceridwen, rides with Ælfred's ambitious son, Prince Eadward, in their wild pursuit of the invaders. After distinguishing himself in the field, Ceric receives a startling order from the king, sending him to Four Stones. There Ashild and her mother, Ælfwyn, contend with the dual claims of duty and desire, and each comes face-to-face with their past - and their future.

At Kilton in Wessex the young lord Edwin, just 16, is overwhelmed at the challenges before him both as a warrior and as a man. Yet he is unexpectedly entrusted with a secret that could shatter all he holds dear.

The fortresses of Kilton and Four Stones. What binds them together now threatens to tear them apart.

Too Much!

I have read the entire series and I loved it. This one not so much. Way too many minor characters thrown in...way too much talking and planning...way too much riding around accomplishing little. I finished the book trying to figure out what is the goal? Was it just an intro to new characters? New generation? Disappointed.

Another good one in the series

This book didn’t have much of Ceridwen in it but it’s still a beautifully written book about her “circle”. Looking forward to what happens next.

Swept Away

Wildswept swept me away with it's descriptions and the unfolding saga of the characters that we've followed for so long.

Surely Book 8 is Coming?

The second half is better than the first. Nano never got involved with telling the story. She was just reading words. Octavia is at her best when she is weaving the stories of her beloved characters, and does a little of that in the second half of the book. The first half has a documentary feeling about it. The author is eager to share her rich knowledge of the history of Gotland, and of the daily life, battle strategies, armament, and power succession of the Vikings. There is too much of that in this book, however, and not enough of the story I waited so long to continue. Just about every character of importance is visited, but the visits are short, hurried and with no lead-in, so I felt like I was plopped down in the middle of the scenes and was left in my own to figure out what was happening. There is very little energy applied to continuity. This is not a stand-alone book. The previous books need to be read first in order to know what is actually going on and why. The final chapter was rushed in a big, big way and the characters ALL deserved better treatment. Not sure how this got past editing, or why it was even released. It seems to be very preliminary. A story board version with the chapters up on the wall waiting to find their proper order. Octavia, I adore you but this needed lots more work.

Love this series

This is not my favorite in the series by far, which is disappointing after waiting so long. I really can’t stand Aschild. She’s a brat. But the series is so beautifully written and so in depth, I love it. I hope the next comes quickly. And I hope Aschild’s choice doesn’t cause a war between Hrald and Cerich
