About this listen
Dusty Lewis has a hard heart. Years of loose living and of following the open trail have left him lonely and empty inside. All he has left, all he loves, is the homesteading life and the band of fellow ranch hands who he travelled with from Fort Worth, Texas to Montana Territory, to set up a new life.
Paradise Ranch is his home now: he's come to terms with not having a family of his own. That is until he meets Jane Wilder. She's running from a troubled past as well, but that past is about to catch up with her.
When the two of them are forced to work together on the run down schoolhouse where Jane is the schoolmistress, she does everything she can to keep her secret safe while he fights his growing attraction to her.
A tragedy throws them together again, and they must each choose whether to follow the path of fear or love, honesty or lies. Can their love overcome the sins of the parents, or will Jane and Dusty miss their chance at happiness?

There was trouble in Haven, Arizona, and Ranger Sam O'Ballivan was determined to sort it all out. He arrived posing as the new schoolteacher, and his first order of business was to bring the rough ranchers' children under control. To that end, he called on Maddie Chancelor, the local postmistress, whose younger brother was in firm need of discipline. Sam wasn't sure what to expect - but it was definitely not this graceful woman whose prim, proper stance was so at odds with the fire in her eyes.

Three stories that share the adventures of first love and second chances. "A Perfect Secret" - Rose Bender’s betrothed, Luke Lantz, is safe and dependable - maybe a little too much so. Or so she thinks until she sees him in the woods one night and discovers a secret he’s been keeping. "Christmas Cradles" - When Anna Stolis takes over for her aunt, the local midwife, Christmas night heats up with multiple deliveries.... "A Marriage of the Heart" - Since her mother’s death, Abigail Kauffman has lived alone....

Second book is even better!
I really like how Dusty has to choose to be part of his new community or to go on and join another roundup. His wanderlust is getting to be tiring, but there are no women around to settle down until he meets Jane Wilder the cousin of his boss's wife who comes to be the town's new schoolmarm. Jane's shame of her past and insecurity of her present and future fears are real and empathetic to the listener as well as Dusty's confusion about and loyalty for trying to figure out this wonderful, yet frustrating woman.
Vivi is continuing a great series and I love the way she continues to weave all of the Paradise Ranch gang together and yet have each story be good as a stand-alone too (though I do suggest getting all of them.) Cody Roberts does an EXCELLENT job with his performance of the characters and the narrative. I love the way he brings a book to life!

The Journey Continues!
I was so glad to see this was Dusty's story and really wanted to get to know him since he played a good part in the first book. Being a cowboy moving for years he was glad to settle at Paradise Ranch and felt he could build a house and settle down. He really was lonely, but he knew he would probably just live his life out on his own.
Jane Wilder is a teacher and ends up getting run out of the town she is in due to everyone finding out about her past. She learns that Genevieve, a cousin, lives in Montana and she helps her find a job nearby.
When Jane meets Dusty, well, let's just say they get a little off on the wrong foot but soon they are thrown together.
Another heartwarming story by this wonderful author and perfect narration by Cody Roberts brings this story to a sighworthy conclusion. Now on to book 3!!

Dusty and Jane hope for a long lasting connection
Dusty wonders if Jane feels he is not suitable for her as he thinks she is above him. Jane actually has something in her past that she feels makes her unworthy of anyone let alone Dusty. They are both good people fearful of their pasts.
