About this listen

Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful - too beautiful for words. Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.

In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

Editorial reviews

Aprilyne Pike's debut, Wings, is the first in a saga that follows Laurel, a high school girl who's coming-of-age story differs from most girls her age when she discovers her true self; she's a fairie! This blend of teen drama and supernatural fantasy presents its own universe with a unique take on fairie folk that will intrigue young listeners. In her performance, Mandy Siegfried sets the tone of the series blending confusion, wonder, and burgeoning romance as Laurel's identity grows and she must choose between the fairie and human in herself and in potential boyfriends.

Critic reviews

"Fine escapist fare, this neatly mixes the everyday with the otherworldly." (Booklist)
"In the current crop of supernatural romances, this one stands out. Silky narration...delicious escapism." (Kirkus Reviews)

One of my favorite books

Love the story. It takes you imagination to another world. I'm just not a big fan of the voices of the characters sometimes.

Could have been better

There were parts of the story I really enjoyed, and others that were just sappy and very unrealistic! It could have used a lot more action. Some of the voices were decent but the bad guys voice was done horribly. I will definitely be reading the next one not listening to it.

Simple elegant A story you can go back to over and over

I first listen to the story I think I was back in middle school. But throughout my life I keep going back to the story over and over again. It makes me feel happy and free. So even though I can get this book at the library for free. So amazing I have a buy it for myself. In fact this book is so great I want to name my son if I ever have after the male fairy character.

I will omit the voice actor isn't the best. But the book is so good I don't care

Charming

I stopped when I had 1/2 hour left to run to the computer to see if this was a series. I enjoyed it so much I do not want the story to end. I want the rest of the series downloaded before I finish this one. I hope the rest of the series is as enjoyable as this one. I found it believable the teenage main character is afraid of what was happening to her (tumor? cancer?) then not wanting to accept her new reality until finally having scientific proof that she is not human explained to her by her new friend. Her reasoning for not going to her parents and later the police are also very believable. I found the frustration by the main character in not being able to find out useful information on the internet interesting as I totally relate. I liked the main characters immediately (very important to me). I am 58 - not a teen myself, but I found I really related to her being thrown into a new environment as a new kid in school. Excellent narrator. Kathy

meh.

Definitely more for preteens. the plot was kind of unorganized and the characters are over developed too quickly making them boring. the narrator does a good job capturing her character, however her character is naive and point of view kind of stunted. Also she pronounce ylang ylang wrong and that wouldn't matter to me usually, but that's the biggest impression she made on me.

There's some action which is good, but somethings in the plot don't make sense (SPOILER ALERT: An example is it takes weeks for Laurel to even accept the thought she is a fairy even without any other explanation, and her parents take hardly any time to wonder why or how a bunch of fairies gave her a big ass diamond to save their old land.)

have to listen to the whole series as I am book trading but really hope things get better.

Refreshing Change from the Usual Steamy YA Drama

The short version: I love how this book doesn’t stretch a few interesting storylines into a drawn-out three-book series. Instead, it delivers a concise, engaging narrative that keeps the pace brisk and the plot compelling.

Im happy about the world-building in this series and how it takes its time developing the storylines. It’s refreshing to find a book in this genre that’s PG-rated, which is rare and a welcome change. There’s almost no teen drama, and the characters exhibit real respect and fondness for each other, which enriches their interactions.

The main character can sometimes come across as a bit young and not overly wise, but this adds to the realism and helps the reader connect with the storylines.

There are plenty of intriguing plotlines happening simultaneously, and I’m finding it hard to pace myself and not rush through all the books. I’m devastated that Audible doesn’t have the 5th book—what a loss!

I’m currently on the 3rd book, and some plots from the 1st book remain unresolved and mysterious. That said, it doesn’t feel like the plot points are being unnecessarily dragged out. The resolutions are unpredictable, at least to me, but that’s part of the fun. I’m thoroughly enjoying both the day-to-day lives of the characters and the more adventurous elements, so it’s all working well together.

The narration is great!

Highly Recommend this series. I will be reading all of her other books in short order.

Excellent concept; excellent execution.

Brilliant mixture of science and magic. The book is also a smooth mixture of genres. It starts as a new-kid-in-town teen high school story (AKA romance), but the mystery and danger slowly ramp up into a good-vs.-evil action adventure. If the book hadn't included the usual boring love triangle, I'd have given it 5 stars. Great story all around.
