About this listen

If your superpower meant you could turn into a kitsune, a powerful fox spirit, you wouldn’t fear for the life of your mate, right?

Sebastian survived an entire year on the run from the supernatural. Then he met Liam, his fated mate and alpha werewolf, and thought maybe he’d found a home. Until the fae come calling. They want control of Seb’s power, even if that means eliminating Liam to get it.

When a trick leaves Seb in trouble with the werewolves, the military, and the fae, he fears his only option is to run. Except Seb is done running. He will stop at nothing to keep Liam by his side, even if it means letting his beast loose on them all.

Lissa Kasey was a new author for me when I read the Kitsune Chronicles. When I found that the two books I had read in the series were also out on Audible I snatched them up! Loved the Audible version and absolutely loved the narrator!

I cannot wait for the next book, I'm hoping there will be another one. I'm addicted to the story line and the style of writing. That is suspenseful and action packed with a wonderfully bizarre mythical cross species romance. That is heartwarming and addicting. I can't get enough, I simply want more.

Really good!

This was a challenging book to review. On one hand I really enjoyed the characters and plot, but at the same time I found myself losing my patience over and over again. Every plaintive wail of "I NEED LIAM!!" made me want to kick the main character in the balls just to remind him that he does in fact have a pair. He's in love and found his mate, I get it. But he literally just recently met the guy and is just starting to know him, and yet he still needs to cry out for Liam over and over and over again in the whiny voice that the narrator gave him? Ug, that was frustrating!

I enjoyed the fact that the wolves were running a bakery so their new member could fit in well. The fae 'lawyer' character was entertaining, and the surreal qualities of Underhill always hold my interest. I did appreciate that Nicky was brought back in this book, and his storyline clearly isn't finished yet. The book did suffer from excessive introspection by the main character. He was constantly in his own head, belittling himself and focusing on his insecurities and anxiety to the detriment of his relationships and the overall plot. Every time things got going well he'd derail the story to tell us again about all his problems ad nauseum. It didn't matter how many times other people assured him about things, he didn't listen.

I saw a lot of comments about the Mercy Thompson series in the reviews before I started reading this series. There are indeed a lot of plot and character parallels. They're both about a mixed-race shifter who was raised by the leader of the werewolves, who ran away when the leader's son took a sexual interest in them. They both ended up mated to a divorced alpha werewolf who had a teenage human daughter, and even though they were both shunned by much of the pack, the alpha took them in anyway. They both bring chaos due to their trickster natures and they both have magical powers that they don't understand yet. Both suffer from panic attacks due to a rape experience, both like to bake sweets, both end up in the hospital because they're not as durable as the wolves, etc. I think the main difference is that Mercy was independent and stubborn through everything, while Seb was more damaged and his default setting was "Liam! Save me!" All that said, I did enjoy this book. Did I make a game out of catching the Mercy parallels? Yup! Was it different enough to make it a brand new story with characters I liked and a plot that I could enjoy while I worked? Also, yup!
