Publisher's summary

When a cop shoots down the son of a respected inner-city Baptist preacher, the community rises up in anger and demands to have the officer prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. But there's something more than a call for justice at work here. There's a plot to bring down the city's police force through a conspiracy so vast and malicious that only Butch Karp, his wife, and his band of truth-seekers can untangle it.

Author Tanenbaum takes on those who use...

...social justice as an excuse for criminality including murder. DA Butck Karp puts a cop killer on trial in Without Fear or Favor. This is only the second novel by Robert K Tanenbaum, but it is now obvious that he is firmly on the side of law ad order. It is also obvious that he can tell a great story. Without Fear or Favor offers strong suspense as well as lots of action inside and outside the courtroom. Tanenbaum takes on social and political issues of the day with moral clarity that is refreshing. It is an outstanding novel. Narration by Peter Berkrot is strong, but not as good as Bob Walter in his narration of Fatal Conceit. I highly recommend this book for those who like legal and political thrillers.

23 of the 29 novels in this series are available at Audible. Only 2 of the 23 have received any Audible reviews. Only 9 of the 23 have received 50 or more ratings from Audible listeners. The Kindle versions of the novels in the series do no better. This is a great series. Maybe, just maybe, the author and publishers would receive more revenue from the series through promotion including price reductions.

Narrator(s)

Authors: pay attention!! Bad narrators can RUIN your audiobook!! Narration is almost always the reason for me to dislike an audiobook. Do the authors even listen to their book? So many of them write excellent books, are very successful authors, make lots of money and could afford the best narrator, but some reason settle for a less than stellar narrator and, worse, an awful narrator.

Robert Tanenbaum has changed narrators to Peter Berkrot, and his voice is so annoying, I may have to stop the book. He tries to give a different voice to each person, but isn't consistent with which one has which voice. Doesn't really matter since they're all bad. Butch Karp, the ongoing star of Tanenbaum's books, is born and raised in New York. Previous narrations make this clear and the voice is authentic and charming and believable. In this book, he sounds like somebody with something stuck in his throat, narrating for a mouse caratoon. Totally unbelievable. The other voices are just as annoying, grating, strangled-sounding. They sound cartoonish. I just don't get it. Why????

I'm going to keep trying, but this audiobook may go back just because of the narrator.

Butch Karp - Need I say more?

It seems as though Robert Tanenbaum and Butch Karp have been around for ever. I started reading this series almost 30 years ago and for the most part have enjoyed every book. I guess it all depended on who his ghost writer was.
Anyway, this book is written so well and the storyline is current. It deals with racial issues and the killing of black youths by white police. There is also some yellow journalism, a Reverend who likes to stir up trouble and a young man whose taken the name of Nat X but has absolutely nothing in common with the man he pretends to emulate. It's all smoke and mirrors to cover his own demented agenda.
This book has it all, great police procedural taking the lead with equally good courtroom scenes. Vivid characters that you can "see" and and almost smell! Get the book and you'll understand!
Peter Berkrot does an outstanding job narrating. One of the characters has Tourette's syndrome and he nails it perfectly. If you have an aversion to foul language this may not be the book for you.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

good story, southern drawl out of place

story was good, but a little predictable once they got to trial. Narrator was very good, but the southern drawl was out of place in the New York setting, and pronouciation of Italian names was off.

Gripping story about clash between social activists and police

Great story that is very topical for what is currently happening in our society. I miss the longer novels from Tanenbaum and hope that we may see them again. Well worth the credit.

Editor needs a dictionary

Is it too much to ask to have the editor insist that the talent use similar pronunciation for the characters that were used in the past? The guy was superb and I’ll search books narrated by him in the future but I believe the producers should be Bette informed on past productions. Minor annoyance, but other than that every bit as good as listening to Richard Ferrone!

Not bad

Not sure if the writer was on a mission toward the end. Great story, but not interested in personal opinions in the story.

Worst narrator ever

Narrator with fake New York accent is horrible. Ruins the listening pleasure. Fortunately I read the book so knew the story.
