About this listen

Debut author Sheldon Siegel bursts into the legal thriller arena with a riveting courtroom drama, exposing the world of big-time law firms and lawyers in a fresh, sharp-witted, wonderfully sardonic novel.

Meet Mike Daley. Ex-priest. Ex-public defender. And as of yesterday, ex-partner in one of San Francisco's most prominent law firms. Today he's out on his own, setting up practice on the wrong side of town. Then his best friend and former colleague is charged with a brutal double murder, and Daley is instantly catapulted into a high-profile investigation involving the prestigious law firm that just booted him.

As he prepares his case, Daley uncovers the firm's dirtiest secrets. It doesn't take long for him to discover that in this trial, ambition, friendship, greed, and long-standing grudges will play just as important a role as truth and justice.

Brilliantly paced, crackling with energy and suspense, Special Circumstances reminds us why we love to hate lawyers - but can't get enough of courtroom drama when it's done this well.

The book itself was reasonably good, with decent character development and plot. I did figure out the twist at the end, and the clues came fairly early one. The narrator did a decent job with different characters, but he had a tic that I just couldn't get past. Fortunately it didn't happen that often. There are words that are properly ended with long e after pluralizing, like indices (plural of index). This narrator pronounced every plural word with a long e, even when it made no sense whatsoever. So senses would be sensees. Offices became officees, faces facees (that one was really weird as it sounded remarkably close to feces). I have never heard anyone speak this way. So odd!

Oddest narration tic ever

I loved the way that the author showed both sides of the crime - one side was from the criminal's perspective - the other was how the police attempted to make sense of the clues and sometimes the lack of them. I also loved how all the pieces of the puzzle finally came into place for the big picture but not until towards the end.

Another excellent read!!!

I am an attorney and new a lot of the trial maneuvers and lingo, so the descriptions got a little old, but otherwise, it was a good book, reminiscent of some of John Grisham's work.

If you like a good plot twist, this is your read!

Story is interesting and so are the characters. The courtroom twists and turns will keep you and the jurors tuned in...and wondering who done it. Liked it well enough to move on to book 2.

I liked the book quite well and thought the narration was generally good. The only issue with the narration was that the voices of Mike, Joel, and Joel's father were all pretty close. When they were having conversations, it was tough to distinguish who was speaking at times.

Entertaining legal thriller
